Is my computer powerful enough?????????

Hello to all. I`m hoping someone with knowledge of computers can tell me if my computer is powerful enough. After awhile of playing an error pops up and says "out of memory" also during the battle mode it pauses every few seconds as does the short movie clips. Finally my ships are all plain, I don`t have any fancy looking ships.

My computer has: pentium(R)4 cpu 1:80 GHz
1.79 GHz, 256 mb Ram

Nvidia Ge force4 MX 420 7.1.8.9

DirectX9c

I really want my game to work properly and I`m looking forward to the expansion pack.
Please give me some advice. Thank you.

You might find your vidcard holds you back a bit, and you definitely want more RAM (It's not 1999 any more...)

That's probably far too little ram.

If it can handle nine question marks reliably, it can handle GalCiv II.

But I agree you may want more RAM. The CPU is probably alright; I don't believe Galciv II is all too heavy on the CPU, being turn-based. The video card isn't state-of-the-art but should suffice if you don't want to crank everything to the max.

Only thing I can say, is head down to wally-world and get some more memory. I've got 1 gig on my box, using the StarTrek/Stargate ships and she runs smooth- (2.0ghz athlon xp on a vintage 1999 motherboard- lol) with an old ti4600 card. Two sticks of 512 well do you good- if you don't feel like wally world- newegg always has the good stuff -

119.00 for a gig pack- of course always make sure you order the right stuff...

Ditto on the need for more RAM as everyone has said. You may also want to check that you're up-to-date on patches, as there was a bug that could cause that error as well in earlier versions. But with only 256mb of RAM, it's quite possible to run out of memory if you try to play any but the smaller sizes, especially if your swapfile is not set very large.

Your current video card is also below the minimum requirements for the game, so you're likely missing out on quite a bit of graphical goodness (ship textures in particular--on a GeForce4 MX, they'll look like two-color plastic toys rather than being fully textured).

If you want more detailed advice, find the file debug.err in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2, open it with notepad, and copy/paste all the hardware info from it into a reply here. That'll tell us more about your system, and what we can do to get you fixed up.

Thank you very much. Can you tell me what is better than a Geforce4 Mx 7.1.8.9
I wrote what my computer has, above but if you need something else i`ll try and get it. Also I`m probably going to buy a new computer next year or when the new windows comes out so if you have any advice on that. that would be great. Unfortunately I`m new to computers so everything is confusing. I play games on my computer because i`m a big strategy fan.
Once again thank you.

Get an ATI 9600xt, i think they go around $30 to $50. Not a big investment to get a descent graphic for this game. Note, check if its on an AGP slot or not. Ram, well.. it depends, um.. Find out what type of ram you got. They are usually SDRAM, DDR, or DDR2. If you still got the manual for your PC, it should say. If your motherboard is old, you might have to get 4 256MB ram stick since the older motherboards can't read more than 256s.

My advice, take that pc to a mom and pop PC place (Don't go to Best Buy or any of those places, they'll try to rip you off.. i know, i use to work for em.) The Mom and Pop place should tell you what yo need and what kind of system you have. I found them to be more honest in recommending types of upgrades.

Get yourself a Nvida Geforce 6000 or better. the more ram on the card the better, killer deals on ebay.
