It said on manual...about defence value

Question:On game manual, it says the defender rolls value between 1 and its
defending value. Is that means ship with 0-0-0 def. will get 1 defence?
If so any defence 1 becomes useless?

Another question follows.

If so, suppose defender ship has 0-0-1 defence. The attacker attack with
1-0-0. The defender gets 1 for base(as manual says)
AND 1(square root of one is 1 )for non optimal defence, which gives for
total of 2 defence.

A ship with 1-0-0 will get still total of 1 defence inspite it has
def vs beam wepons and it performs no better than 0-0-1 defence.

Am I misunderstanding or misunderstood something?

Well, I trust ppl in stardock so I assume they have managed on that matter.

Any findings fellow gamers?

1. The defence role is actual 0 - (Highest Def.) The Manual is incorrect.

2. Even if it was not incorrect, a ship with zero defence would logically never recieve 1 defence. I do not thing defence is rolled for those ships.

The minimum defense value is 0, it's the minimum attack value that's 1. This means that against a ship with no defense you'll always get at least 1 damage.
