Sins of a Solar Empire...

Coming next year to a store near you...

Stardock is pleased to announce that it has teamed up with Ironclad Games to publish a new real-time space strategy game called Sins of a Solar Empire.

Sins of a Solar Empire puts the player in command of an interstellar civilization. That part no doubt sounds familiar to Galactic Civilizations fans. But unlike Galactic Civilizations, Sins is real-time.  Players colonize planets, create trade routes, negotiate treaties and build up their military might to send out epic fleets that do battle across many planets.  The game is being designed such that players do no have to baby-sit their units. The unit AI can more than take care of itself allowing players, if they wish, to focus on running their empire.

In terms of what the game play is like, probably the best analogy would be that it plays quite a bit like Homeworld meets Galactic Civilizations meets Total Annihilation. It has a truly epic feel like Galactic Civilizations, has a visual and game play feel like Homeworld but allows the player to queue up commands and build a strong strategy ala Total Annihilation. It's not about how fast you can click, it's about how good of a strategy you can put together.

Players will be able to see this for themselves this Winter in a public beta program.  In a couple weeks, players will be able to start pre-ordering the game. Users who pre-order will be able to participate in the beta.  The release date of the game was intentionally pushed all the way back to August of 2007 so that beta testers could give feedback not just about bugs and such but provide game play suggestions and feedback as well so that there is ample time to incorporate user feedback into the final game.  The goal is to create something truly special that will stand the test of time.

To learn more about the game, you can visit www.sinsofasolarempire.com (or http://sins.stardock.com). Your UserID and Password from GalCiv2.com will work there as well.

Traditionally I have hated RTS - they all seem one big Click Fest and verging on moronic in engaging the player's brain. I hope the fact that Ironclad are developing and Stardock are Publishing/Distributing will not affect the traditional high quality and response now expected and loved all in Stardock Games. It doesnt matter who actually developed, the game will be associated with Stardock, and that sets expectations. I hope this is not driven solely by finance and expansion motivations, another moronic game joining the other ones in the genre will seriously harm Stardock.

Having said that, my faith in the Stardock team remains unabated, and maybe, just maybe, you will succeed in getting me into RTS - thats a tall mountain to climb because I hate the damn things, but your performance with GalCiv2 has me on side and willing to try it. If its just another moronic RTS, in my eyes you will undo all the good work and customer relationship building so admirably achieved with GalCiv2.

Stardock now stands for quality games that engage the gamers brain - dont - please dont - throw that away for a tacky short term rush to expand Publishing. I have faith, at the moment, and will watch with great interest as this one unfolds.

Well SD isn't involved in the design of this one right? They are the publisher I believe. How much input/impact they have on the actual game might be quite low. Certainly from my pov it sounds like this is geared to be more of a MP game, so I'm guessing (and hope I'm wrong) that the excellent AI work SD puts into GC is not going to translate into this new title.

Yeah, lets hope it turns out that way. These things have a way of sounding better than they actually wind up being.

Maybe it will play like the EU games?

if we actually get to design ships that will fight in 3D space... that would add a lot of challenge. now this would be a heaven.
imagine this: you position your fleet, order it to go stealth (minimum power usage, passive sensors only) and then on the inertia alone hit the enemy shipyard facilites from above or below, just where that sensor/weapon blindspot is. or you bring out your heavy guns... only to realize too late that by putting them on a fixed position, rather then mount, you have a huge blindspot above...
also, as pointed before, homeworld lack of scope made it more of tactical simulator. building entire fleets, not just strike groups, then deploying them... building your economy, researching new technologies... now that would be a heaven. count me in on that one

If it's like Imperium Galactica 2 I'm in for it

Unfortunately, the developer says there will be no ground combat. IG2 is due for a genuine remake. Did Hegemonia do a decent job at that?

What I dread is this kind of review:

"Sins of a Solar Empire is projecting us as a leader of an intergalactic faction. It's a RTS 4X game, but sadly, there is too much things to think about for managing all our fleets in a tactical efficiency"

While it's the point about "No Tactical" in GalCiv2, is that, as the Leader of an Empire, you don't have the time to manage every freaking battle yourself! You give the order, and cross the fingers.

Maybe leader 1 or 2 fleets on the frontline, but I would consider a "game-over" if your Flagship + Escape pods are destroyed!!

Check out Kerberos Production's Sword of the Stars. This is the Homeworld Cataclysm team doing something very similar to what Sins is described to. Let me say, I've played the SoTS demo and did not purchase the game though I was very excited about it initially. I found the interface to be kludgy and that combat was not satisfying. Much rather play GalCiv2. Watching the battles there is more fun than the limited participation in SoTS. (plug, plug). Anyway, may the Sins team check this out and avoid what they did like the plague.

Im intrigued that this will be full RTS. I would love to know about multiplayer copability. I'm glad stardock is becoming a widely known distributor, because they are way better than all the other BS company like strategy first and Take2 or what not.

Sins will support up to 10 players in multiplayer via Internet or LAN.
