AI builds on Bonus tiles

Not that bad!!!

I have played 10+ games (large, challenged) and using the espionage strat, my count is that the AI uses the bonus tiles correctly 70% of the time. The other % the AI sometimes has a reason (ex: needed a farm because I was going to invade). So for about 25% of the time the AI build the "wrong" structure on the bounus tile...what is other players experience on this topic ?

I have tried huge & tough, but these are long hard games... I keep getting my butt handed back to me.

Often just building on a bonus tile isn't really the way to go. Sometimes a bonus tile will shape how you develop a planet, other times they just help, and occasionally you don't want to de-focus your planet style to use the bonus.

IE big planet with a research tile.
1) solid research planet
2) economy world and just another stock market there.

What's bad, is when they have buildings that should be on the bonus tile. IE have a factory on a 300% research, and have a research building somewhere else on the planet. This doesn't happen too much anymore.

I think that gallagher118 is confirming my observation. Only about 25% of the time does the AI build a factory on a research bonus tile.

Building a factory on a research bonus isn't too bad if the planet is a manufacturing powerhouse without needing research buildings.... as long as the AI doesn't decide to place a research building somewhere else on the planet

I'd set an AI behavior where at least for farming/research/influence tiles, it always builds on the bonus tile first. I'd even throw it in for factory tiles, as 9 times out of 10 the extra production offsets the economy hit.

If a human would do it 100% of the time, I don't mind it being scripted.

Playing my second 1.3 game I noticed about the same. However it seems AI likes to plant a special project on a bonus tile. But in one occassion the building was almost completely off: Torians got a class 11 planet with 8 bonus tiles, and had built there only one factory on a 300% production tile, starport on a regular tile, the rest were ALL morale buildings (only two of them on morale tile). And after Drengin conquered that planet, situation hasn't changed for tiniest bit - they left there everything untouched, and even hadn't built any ships!!!

Checked out some of the civs in my current game -- 1.31, suicidal, gigantic, 9 opponents
I was surprised to find them using the bonus tiles preety good.
I ignored the food and influence bonus tiles.

The Yor used 23 of 25 bonus tiles correctly by my standards
1 stock market on a research bonus tile -- no research buildings on the planet
i factory on an approval bonus tile -- no approval or market buildings on planet

The Altarians used 19 of 20 bonus tiles correctly -- actually 20 of 20
1 Research building on an approval bonus tile -- Tech Capital world -- no approval or markets on planet

The Drath used 21 of 25 bonus tiles correctly
1 Research on an approval bonus tile -- planet has a stock market
2 research on approval bonus tiles -- planet has 1 stock market
1 factory on an approval bonus tile -- planet has 1 stock market

The Korx used 27 of 28 bonus tiles correctly
1 research on an approval bonus tile -- no approval or markets on planet

The Dregin used about 47 of 55 bonus tiles correctly
1 factory on an approval bonus tile -- another approval bonus tile used correctly on the planet
1 approval on a research bonus tile -- class 5 planet -- no research buildings on planet.
1 market on a research bonus tile -- class 5 planet -- no research buildings on planet
1 factory on on an approval bonus tile -- class 5 planet -- has an approval building on an influence bonus tile
1 market on a research bonus tile -- 1 research building on a normal tile on planet
1 factory on on a research bonus tile -- class 5 planet -- no research buildings
A class 5 planet that has
Starport on Research bonus tile
Market on research bonus tile
Research on an approval bonus tile

A lot of these " mistakes " could be attributed to changing strategies as a planet is developed.
Overall the AIs are using the bonus tiles a lot better than what I felt they were.

I have found that for the most part, they do use the bonus tiles pretty well. Especially the production bonuses.

The one thing I would like to change is their tendency to put non-destructable buildings on them. Taking over a planet and finding a Technology Capitol on a +300% research(don't beleive it helps in that case) can be irratating.

As I said in the other thread, the AI is very much about "What do I need right now?" and not so much about "What would this planet be best for?", and it's not easy getting it to achieve the proper balance between the two. But things have definitely been improved in 1.3 versus older versions.

I don't mind it being scripted.

Brad does mind though

In some cases, you don't WANT to use a bonus tile. Perfect example of this is the food tile. In most cases I will build anything BUT a farm on it, for the simple fact that by doing so would create an over populated planet (making it more difficult to keep happy). So I think that there are certainly times when not using a tile is a good idea.

Just my 2 credits.

What really steams me is when the AI puts a unique building on an inappropriate world(Manufacturing Capitol on a class 5 planet) or a bonus tile.

Last night I ran across a 12 planet that the AI had put a facotry on a 700% research tile. I am sorry but the 'scripting' needs some work, you don't need a factory bad enough to give up a %700 research tile no matter the size of planet.

I see much the same things as Kblore. For the most part they get it right even though they are going by
"What do I need right now?"
instead of
"What would this planet be best for?"
.

I don't really have a problem with the kooky way the AI builds their planets except for one thing. I've seen them build special projects like economic capitols and manufacturing capitols on low PQ plants. That's just too retarded. Why would you ever build something like that on a class 5 planet? I could see where a PQ 13 planet could get hammered down to a class 8 or something from multiple mass driver invasions, but I don't think that's what's going on. I think they're acutally building them on a low PQ planet to start with. When I see that I get irritated and think, "damn retarded aliens, what a waste."
