Continuing with a game, postponing victory?

Ideas of interesting experiments with Galciv II

I usually postpone victory a little, because some self determined goals were not yet accomplished. Usually these subgoals are along the line of wanting to destroy the final opponent with the strongest ships I can build (taking some more reasearch) or perfecting a particular planet.
With my last game, I've deliberatedly cancelled an influence victory by declaring war on one of the two remaining races. I was aiming for a conquest victory, but by accidentally stealing all the influence techs and being by far the most powerful faction, the influence victory is kind of 'forced' on me.
This game was interesting because the amount of planets was virtually doubled by an event. Now I'm thinking of continuing the game for a while and doing something silly with it..
I have one opponent and one ally left at the moment. I'm thinking of giving half of my planets to my ally or to a possibly emerging Minor or something. Or developing all the extra planets for a huge population.

I'm very interested to hear from other people what they did with games which were actually finished from a victory perspective.

sometimes i use them to try something, kinda like what you do.
however most things i've already tried yet...so i just finish the game cause i am really bored with it.
that is, the last part of the game, grabbing another 200 planets knowing you are the strongest and are gonna win anyway are pretty boring but needed for a conquest victory.
so i just take the victory and start another game.

I typically disable all victory conditions except alliance (and conquest of course). I like to have the alliance victory condition enabled so that if I get bored with the game I have the chance of ending it early, but I have yet to use it.

For non-Metaverse games whatever you want to do that's fun from your perspective is fine. I agree with Mystic though and find that it usually just gets boring. For Metaverse games, milking the score by extending the game is a bit cheesy (as well as boring). I personally think it's reasonable to extend the game to December of the current year, but much beyond that you're probably better off submitting the game you have and getting started with a new game anyway.

Except military conquest.

Yea extend to Dec 22nd.

This is what I do, but to extend any further? Nah...I just have not got the patience, game playing time to do this...even if it means missing out on 100,000+ metaverse points...

The thing is it doesn't miss out on 100K points (I've checked this out) it's usually closer to 10K points per year, why even bother?

I normally run with all victory conditions disabled except military conquest. Although, in my current game, I wish I had alliance victory enabled because I'd like to end it right now, but I'm stuck with military conquest all the way.

I do sometimes drag a game out a little because I like to realize my full potential regardless of how I'm doing compared to the other races. But, as previously stated, that can get boring. Even so, it can be hard to resist.

Even if you did not disable Tech victory, you can postpone that by setting your tech spending to 0%. I had to do that once to prevent a game from ending prematurely. Usually, though, I also disable everything except conquest.

I like to use only Tech and Conquest, and I just slow down if I want to drag things out, or beat down a foe if they go for tech victory.

I was dissapointed with my last game when the final enemy between me and a Conquest victory surrendered with like, 12 planets still in his empire.

Oh, I want to spare my citizens death in an unwinnable war!

Stupid alien, you're Yor. I'm just going to dissassemble all of your 'citizens' and use their parts to build factories anyway.

I've noticed the all the victories except conquest become possible at about the same time on gigantic maps. By the time your influence is dominant, your tech tree is almost done, and eveyone is afraid of you and will ally with you if you wish. My point being that the other victory conditions, beside conquest, are nearly interchangeable, and therefore exterranous.

Yep conquest, military and alliance are so close to the same thing it is hardly worth having them in the game. I think vicotry conditions could use some tweaking. For the most part I have turned off conquest vicotry because I like to crush my enemy but I am thinking of turning it back on as the end game is starting to get boring to me.

I wish there was a way they could spice up the end game but every turn based stratigy game I have ever played has this same problem and I am not sure what you could do about it.

I usually have the Tech Victory in the bag, but I postpone that until I am sure I can't get a Diplomatic or Influence Victory, as I have most Tech Vics from before, I usually try to win the latter two if possible.

I played "Sim-Galaxy" in my last game on a gigantic map. The game was pretty much over right after the expansion phase as I had 45% of the planets (this was challenging difficulty). I decided to see how much I can build up my empire and when I finally conquered the last planet I had 16 Trillion people under my rule.
