Crippling Ships

If we want to add some realism to the game, we could add that a ship looses some attack/defence/speed when he is a 50% of hit points, and he is a sitting duck if he reaches 25% of his hit points.

In a battle, when a ships reaches 25%, the other ships doesn't consider it a treath anymore, and will change target. If the winning side has crippled ships left on his side, he could either:

- Leave the crippled ships in the middle of space until tractor ships (see below) arrives (or an ennemy fleet seize the opportunity for an easy kill)
- Stay with the ships until repairs are made.

So, a new module could be added to everyships: Tractor beams. It allow ships to haul them to safety.

At the end of a winning battle, you would be left with the choice of:

- Destroying the ennemy crippled ships (free action)
- Leaving them.

You could haul ennemy cripple ships to nearby military starbases (or planet) to capture them... Maybe even working reverse engineering on them, or just using them. Etc... Superpowerful ships such as Dread Lords' could not be captured.

There's no need for bumping, especially after only 45 seconds.

Anyhow, I would personally prefer it stays as it is. If ships lose power as they take damage, it would destroy any balance between fighters and large ships--one of the advantages of large ships is the fact that they don't lose any power until they go down for good. If they lost power, in addition to only being able to target one enemy per round, there'd be no point at all in building anything but tinies.

I think even Master of Orion didn't involve degradation of ship performance- at least not overtly. A ship could take alot of punishment before the 'systems' would take any damage, as weapons would have to go through both shields and armor before it started hitting structural and equipment.

IMO, crippling ships wouldn't add anything to the game and just add one more worry to managing your fleet. What I DO think would be a good idea is that for there to be a technology to be researched that allows larger ships to compete against swarms of smaller ones, like a targetting computer. It would allow these ships with multiple powerful weapons to have some damage apply to the next available target in a combat round, but ONLY if there was an unfired weapon available to engage that next target. Could make things interesting....

What might be fun is the ability to disable and capture an enemy ship if you could do just enough damage to disable it without destroying it, and you had the proper infiltration module. This would allow you to capture some unknown tech on the ship, which seems unbalanced at first glance, but if you think about it, if you have the ability to 'toy' with an enemy ship (ie, widdle slowly away at their health while they're all-out trying to kill you and still win) you're probably going to be ahead enough in tech that it won't really shift the balance of power too much anyway.

But it's fun for those of us that want to play a pirate trade empire! First I capture your ship, then I sell it back to you!
