Well, I found it funny.

Never said I was Carlos Mencia! Just a "harmless" joke(so I thought) that I didn't think would get censured. Besides, it was aimed at an "older" crowd than the teenies so,,, now I could tell a few that would definitely get me into trouble in here

There was no language. This is Stardock's forum, not yours. What they say goes, and they don't have problems with types of trees, ash, or a part of a woodpeckers anatomy. What would I do? Say wood[censored]?

I do have a small suggestion for you. You make a good point about minors being on this forum and the joke being inappropriate. Then the post goes on to say

. While this is a true and correct statement, it's also a personal attack, and, generally, people will respond in kind. Discussions then deteriorate into tit-for-tat insults, rather than finding a resolution (in this case, encouraging someone to find a better forum for this kind of joke).

That's a good question. First a joke is posted, where the humor involves the facts that "beech" sounds almost like that word for a female dog and "birch" looks almost like that word. Putting that word into the phrase "son of a beech" or "son of a birch" gives them a completely different, and derogatory, meaning. Also, the word "ash" sounds almost like that word for buttocks and "pecker" is slang for a part of human anatomy. Putting those words into that last sentence and you've got something most parents would object to having their 12 year old read. Making those substitutions was the point of the joke, and we all know it.

Then, someone posts a strongly worded message about the joke being inappropriate for the minors who read this forum.

The response? A veiled threat. While the threat wasn't intended to be taken too literally, it was intended to intimidate (and intimidate a minor, at that).

Then someone points out that there was nothing wrong with the language. While that is literally true (nothing's wrong with the words "beech," "birch," "ash," "pecker"), the only way of taking the OP as a joke is by making the substitutions I mentioned above. There are a lot of jokes that play on words like this, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that a 12 year old can figure it out. The intent of phrases like "there was absolutely nothing wrong with the language" and "There's nothing at all wrong here from the point of what you're saying" is to make someone feel like they're wrong and, so, intimidate them. That joke is all about sexual innuendo (and we all know it), so attempting to defend it based on the actual words is simply an attempt to deceive.

That post then goes on to use phrases like "You have the choice of leaving," "[m]aybe you could go to a pokemon site," "[t]his is Stardock's forum, not yours," "What would I do? Say wood[censored]?," and "Grow up. There's nothing at all wrong here from the point of what you're saying." Again, those are all literally true, but their intent is to intimidate someone into being quiet or, worse, leaving.

So, yes, your question is a good one.

What is with me? I saw attempts to belittle and intimidate someone who was doing the right thing (and someone who's a minor, at that). I stood up to encouraged them, and let them know that they're right.

This forum is for the video game Galactic Civilizations 2 (which isn't rated for adults only, or even 17+). When I saw the headline, I thought you'd found an Easter egg in the game, or maybe some way of triggering an amusing bug. I didn't expect to find a bad joke.

Evil Stormbringer, you made a mistake. That's not the kind of joke that should have been posted here, and you know it. Someone publicly pointed this out, and in strong language, to boot. The appropriate response would have been to apologize and ask StarDock to delete the thread.

Cari removed the post with the out-right offensive language, but said the joke was OK and would be left to stand.  That's about as official a pronouncement on the joke as you can possibly get.

I'm not sure what a "Tipper"

Tipper Gore is the wife of former VP Al Gore and she was one of the originators in the mid eighties of the movement to censor music. Her cause was extreme and unjust, and was definitely out of the Third Reich book burning measures. To quell the public and make compromises to get her way, the labelling system which you now see on music cd's is thanks to her. Basically it was an act of aggression on her and her supporters part against free speech and free consumerism(your right to buy what you wish, so long as it is not illegal merchandise). When video games hit "mainstream" as I like to say, with content that some may find offensive (and realize that it is from almost all of us thirty somethings that these games came from/were made for)the developers decided to beat Tipper and others like her to the punch and censor themselves, hence video game ratings.
As far as the joke, sorry. This is the ONLY forum where people took offense from a simple joke. A joke. Bad taste, I will never say that. Funny? So stupid that yes, to me it is funny. Sharing it with friends? Well, even though I can't call you people in here friends we do have something in common, this game. So in my opinion, we are all friends, in however a small way, because we have this common factor. Honestly, I never thought about kids in here, and if I had, I wouldn't have seen a response like that coming from a million parsecs away. Shelter them, hide them, do whatever it is you do to suppress a child's innate curiosity and protect them from the world. Just realize that you only fool yourself, you raise a person who is not well rounded, and even worse, can only see the world through one set of lens'. Trust me, I will never again post a joke on this forum, simply because of the people who have devoted so much time to making life miserable over a stupid thing. See, I would have approached this situation like this: Read joke; consider funny or not; make comment(bad joke/good joke); move on with life. Does this not seem more logical than all the complaining. PS: B***H is in the dictionary defining a female dog. It is not a swear word, it is not a bad word. A fag is a bundle of sticks. Now comment on that one.

I read the original post thinking it was something game related, but it turned out to be a bad joke. I'm fine with that--not everyone can be a writer for Johny Carson. I read the replies to see if anyone posted a good joke (no one did, oh well). A 12 year old understood the joke. No problem, I knew worse jokes when I was 12.

What prompted my first post was you're response to someone who publicly pointed out that the joke was not appropriate for the minors on this forum.

I don't know Night Hawk, but the 12 year olds I do know would be intimidated by that statement coming from a stranger. So, I stood up to tell Night Hawk they did the right thing, to imply you didn't, and add some reassuring comments.

Point taken deim0002. My response may have been inappropriate, but honestly, I was taught a little about respect for my elders. When someone less than half my age chooses to confront me on something as trivial as that, then I have a problem. As I said, he could have read it and moved along, keeping his opinions to himself, aside from a simple, "joke stinks or joke is funny", true? As far as your "cause", whatever. Keep up the good fight if that's what you think you're doing. Nothing wrong with that. But enough of his "childish whining" about the stupid joke already.
