Here's mine although I haven't tried it past the Normal diff setting. In the beginning, I purchase colony ships until I am almost out of money, usually only after three ships. Then I finance a few more. I set my research to 100% and go on a learning spree. After a couple dozen turns I buy whatever improvements I may need to make a given planet more effective. During this time I find that I usually have to finance quite a bit, but then I refuse to trade for techs or ships (just my preference). By now, I am ahead of the curve in tech but I keep pushing research at 100% just to grab a few more techs. At about the midway point I switch over to add some social to the mix, maybe 20% or so. Still not too worried about invasions from enemys so my military is almost non existent, save for maybe a defender or two on key planets. The social increase is just to help out a few planets with building since by now, I have most tiles developed with what I want on them, so anything above and beyond can be built instead of bought. To pass some time I start designing a few specialized ships with the techs I've researched. It's when I just about have all the techs researched. Now I can back it off even more (I usually have all I want on the tech tree at that point)and crank up the military slider to start building my death fleets! But again, this is on easier levels.
