Question on Default Ship Design

Why are there no basic templates?

I am new to this game. One of the big things for me in this game is ship design. I love making my own ships. A lot of space strategy games do not give you the option to modify your ships (especially visually), and those that do (Homeworld for example) only do so to a limited degree.

But in the shipyard screen, I have to use a set of default hulls that are not necessarily in a good shape to build with. They have connection points at odd angles and so forth.

My question is this: Was there a reason they didnt allow us to use basic shapes as the "hull" so that we can build our own ships? For example, just having a hull shaped like a cube or a sphere so that we can easily add parts to it (especially in a symetrical fashion...which is my biggest gripe about using the default hulls)

I know that there is a mod that will let you do this. I am just curious as to whether this was left out of the main game on purpose or if they just forgot to add it. Will it be in the expansion at least?

yea, there is Kryo's Hull System mod which is in the library, you can use any hull you want or even use jewlery as the hull itself.

You cant do it without a mod though?

How stable are mods in this game? That is why I avoid using them...in other games there are always stability issues or it screws up the graphics or something.

Have the DEVs ever given a reason for not including it in the core game?

Kryo's mod works fine. Incompatable with Metaverse games, but if you don't play them, then no worries.

Part of Kryo's mod functionality might appear in a patch (being able to build a ship entirely out of jewelery), but being able to use pre-existing hulls as jewelery is unlikely to be added, as the hulls are more resource intensive, and using lots of hulls on a ship might be very harsh on slower computers.
