The game doesn't seem to take defensive abilities into account

When deciding militery power

I'm playing my first 1.3 game at the moment. Everyone in the universe has missle arnament, except me with beams and the Snathi with mass drivers.

I figured that as everyone else was focusing on missles, it would be sound to focus on a moderate arnament of lasers, I've researched up to laser 5, as nobody would have any shields and focus on very advanced missle defenses.

Thing is, it doesn't seem to take defenses into account in militery rating, so my militery rating is low, causing the Yor to attack me and although I seem to be doing very well in battle, with my Point Defenses against there missle armed ships, while they have no shields against my lasers, everyone considers my militery rating low, including the Yor.

The military rating seems to mostly count quantitiy of ships and not quality. Many games I've had lower mil. ratings but when attacked, my ships would just mop the floor with them. Also if they have a fully upgrade military starbase or two that will boost the rating as well.

it does take defence into consideration but to the same extent as weapons a ship with 10 attack and a ship with 5 attack 5shields have the same raiting though the 5-5 would mop the floor. Also the computor builds alot alot alot alot of ships.

My millitary rating is usually about a third of the highest computer, though when I go to war with them, I completely crush them (pre-1.3). Haven't had the time yet to get far into a game though. I always wished it would go with two ratings....the one they have so you know who has the largest, potentially most powerful fleet. But then have another that would be solely the most powerful fleet that the race can field at the moment. Because it doesn't matter that much how many ships and how many attack\defense they have combined when I get the opportunity to pick their forces apart ship by ship.

This is just a pipe-dream for me, I really don't expect this to change a whole lot.

Something like receiving a Lucky Ranger in an otherwise unmilitarized galaxy can blow your military (and overall, for that matter) rating through the roof.

All the core ships, including the Lucky Ranger, are so slow as to be almost useless, especially late in the game.
