This is why no publisher should ever mention a release date. Or if they must, make it longer than you need, so that you can suprise everyone by being early.

Can't you continue mid game when in the campaign if you apply the patch?

You should be able to continue in the campaign just fine, but it'll be best to finish the mission you're on first.
