I think he was doing more of a thing with allowing you to play as different races instead of factions.

Hmm - I hate to say this - but I can't see the game working that well - and staying true to the star wars universe - using the racial configuration you've shown here.

Why?

Because the Star Wars universe isn't about races, (per se) - it's about factions... The only two races with I'd say are factions, are the Hutts and the Yuuzhan Vong, all the others are part of a larger faction, and some of those will have pretty much the same tech etc. - which is not really what we're after...

Like I said before though - doing a Star Wars total conversion without racial tech-trees isn't really going to work... If you can do that, though, and can make it work, then you should be concentrating on the factions instead of races - since thats where all the tech (and gameplay) differences come from.

A quick list of 10 Star Wars factions (of the top of my head):

Jedi
Sith
(Old) Republic
Confederacy (of Independant Systems)
Empire
Rebellion
Hutts
Black Sun
(New) Republic
Yuuzhan Vong

The only two I can say immediately might not work seperately there, would be the Hutts and Black Sun - since they'd probably use very similar gameplay methods, so one or the other could probably do with a replacment. All the others though should work - with different tech's and stuff etc....

(Yes - I'm a Star Wars Nut - (SWCCG collection etc. ).

I totally agree with you

The reason the races are the way they are is that in game, you will be able to research a tech for the faction you want. We're setting it up so you can basically go through the time line. At first, you choose the CIS or Republic, and then at a given point you choose the Rebellion or the Empire, and later choose between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant, and finally, the Galactic Alliance and the Vong.

We're trying to give as much freedom as we possibly can. This is also the first draft, and may change. But factions, as our mod stands now, will be chosen by techs, not the race selection screen.

We are not so much as trying to stay true to the story line as we are allowing players to "choose their own destiny" and play the way they want, instead of the way we tell them too. This way gives the most options to the player. So yes, you could start out as the CIS, then turn into the empire, then the New Republic, and then the vong. However you want to do it.

We'll see if it tests well, and if not, we'll change it around .

Braden K idea is great, we don't want to be like the others, this game is for races, not Factions, and in-game you can choose what faction you want to be!

what do these techs do? i find it hard to see what bonuses you would get for being the remnant
Reply #10 Top
The techs would only be for which ships you would get...You get the bonuses from your race. We're trying to NOT follow the story line, except when it comes to timing and the order of things. As to WHO is involved and on what side and to what extent, that is up to the player. So if you want to play as the Mon Calamari, you can play with ships from any of the factions by researching that group.

Then there would be different hull techs for each faction. You would have to research through one faction before having the option of choosing the next two.

Either way, we will probably be releasing two version of the Mod. One with the idea (poorly) explained here, and one with factions.

The mod team prefers the 10 race idea and choosing factions in game, but it seems some people prefer having factions.

So in the end, the Vong are going to have to choose between themselves and the Galactic Alliance? Seems like you'll need to do some tweaking with that.
Probably not. The Yuuzhan Vong are both a race and an empire. So both a race and a faction, much like the Chiss, though the Chiss empire is minor in terms of the others.

It just happens that they have the same name. It's not the way we would prefer, but would we take more flak for having a faction and a race with the same name, or creating something out of thin air and throwing that into the mod?

Hmmm i'm not sure this would work all too well. An innovative approach though.
But i'm curious wether it would work out well.

We'll see when we release the mod

Can't wait, looks like it will be a refreshing change!

It sounds pretty cool so far. I will definitely be checking this out when it goes gold.

i actually like the idea of races and deciding factions... even if races are factions just because you are bothan doesnt make you a fan of the empire

however... the Hutt though a race are more of a faction in the grand scheme of things because it isn't actually the Hutt's themself that go out and do things... also, i'm actually surprised droids weren't represented as a race considering the IG droids and Grievous...

and to be a little picky... i think you should use the same source for the race selection pictures... that way when you look at the screen there is some consistency
Reply #19 Top
The only way to get consistency would be to have an artist draw them, and the only artist we've had is too busy with school to make that many portraits and images. He will be creating some logos for us, and for that we are very greatful.

I agree with you, and that would be ideal, but due to the amount of media Star Wars crosses into, and the fact that their is not any single place to get images for everything, this is the best alternative.

Droids are not represented due to the fact that there are so few of them with a mind of their own. They were made to serve biological races, and only a few broke away. Keep in mind Grievous is actually a living being. But just like Vader, he became more machine than a living entity. Saying Grievous is a droid would be including Vader in that faction as well.

Vader and Grievous are both cyborgs in a way but the difference is huge.
In the end Vader is still more human and alive than Grievous.
Grievous mind was altered and he mainly just had some organs and the likes left.
The fact Vader still outclassed everyone midchlorianwise (even though he could've had more if remained unscathed) proves that. Grievous on the other hand had he been forcesensitive would have had no or barely any forcepower left. As there is little of his old self remaining.

Also Correlians are humans.
Nearhumans that one can make a distinction with are say the Mandalorians.
Who originally were a humanlike race with difference. (greater resistance, stamina,...) though this faded over times as humans were integrated.
So perhaps replace the Correlians with Mandalorians?

As for subraces: Perhaps the Noghri, Kathar, Manaan, Wookies... would be good candidates?
But Mandalorians are virtually extinct by the time the mvies take place. So they are a minor race. Corellians are humans, yes, but a distinct and independent branch of them. Not in any biological reason, but philisophically.

We already have 30 odd minor races.

Corellians will stay.
