Influence question

I played a game this past week, using v1.2. Anyway, I was running neck and neck against the Alterians and the ehh... those yellow fellas, the ones with the high Tech, Torians I think....

Anyhow, I was running against them economically and technologically, the other races were stuggling to keep up and basicaly warring themselves into oblivion. Well, suddenly, planet after planet started flipping over too me. Some I didn't mind so much, but others, well, they were like level 2,3,4 and 5. I hated that, also, it took some of the fun outta the game because I was racing the two major races to see if I could beat them. But their planets started flipping shortly after the peon races.

I tried to give influence to the other races to stem the tide, but it didn't seem to have an effect. The only effect I noticed was less voting power for myself. I think.

How can I make it so the other races don't flip? I'd rather beat them with my fleets.
It troubles me that my efforts are wasted trying to research high tech ships to squish my opposition only to have them flip over without so much as a laser blast.

My Space Marines and Pilots were VERY disappointed with the lack of action due to the enemies recognition of my superior culture.

So, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Giving influence in diplomacy only affects voting power, as you've seen. Some things you can do though are to try giving them any influence techs they don't already have, build less influence improvements/starbases yourself, or try quickly building influence bases by their planets (send all the constructors and do it all at once) and give the base to the AI the same turn. Don't be slow about that though, or they'll take the starbase as an act of war.

You could also simply mod the game so all races have ridiculous Loyalty bonuses, thus effectively removing culture flipping from the game.

colonies lower than PQ 3 I always abandon (PQ 1 and 2 are useless), sometimes when I'm neutral, a PQ 4 or 5 might get a boost when I flip them or invade them from a non neutral race. Unless the planet gets a PQ boost from a random event or through the neutral alignment PQ bonus when I invade or culturally flip it, or the planet has some really good bonus on it, I generally destroy it because those will pull down your approval and overall morale too much.

Well, if you don't want them flipping, don't wait so long to conquer them.

Thanks all. I'll try some of the suggestions. I appreciate the help.
As for waiting to squish them, yes, I know.. I have a weakness that way.

I'll bend over backward to try and keep the peace until I can field the largest and greatest ships possible. A bad habit I picked up playing Master of Orion. I like to take on huge empires with huge devestating fleets.

Usually, that's my downfall... but I simply can't help it. I love dreadnaughts.

Edit// If I try to mod it, though that's a last resort, I want them to be able to flip each others if they can, but if I do try to mod it, what would be a good enough bonus to loyalty? 100%? Would that stop flipping? Is there anyway to mod it so that they just won't flip to me?

Nope, whatever way you mod it will affect the AI and you equally insomuch as the AI uses whatever it was you changed (If you gave it a loyalty bonus it would make it harder for that race's planets to flip to anyone in general... 100% would make it tougher, but far from impossible)

You could also try to sell the junk planets to the other AI's and let them be a burden to them for a change....

I use the small planets myself, typically anything less than PQ6 I build all stock markets on them to generate revenue. Unless of course there is a nice tile bonus.
