upgrading ship designs

when upgrading ship-designs...is there a way so that the selected ship retains all its components (not just the "extras") in the "ship design" screen.

e.g.: when a colonisation ship, i'd expect the colonisation module to be present in the "ship design" screen so that all i need to do to upgrade it is to replace its engines.

There is a checkbox to turn parts-removal on or off in the options right next to the slider that sets the rotation angle increments for jewelry.

Kryo, I think that kuertee is referring to that fact when you select upgrade in the main shipyard that it loads up just the shell of that sign design and none of its engines, weapons, defenses or modules.
If fact this is not really an upgrade, it is designing a new ship with the same look.

It would be nice to have the beam weapons of the ship I am trying to upgrade, already on the new shell.

This has been the one annoying thing about ship building that I wish there was a setting to choose between as it is now or add all components to the upgrade design.

Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!

Kyro I think I know what you are talking about. As soon as I get the chance I am going to check it out! This would make this so much easier! WOW! The things you can learn just by reading some of these posts is incredible.

That's exactly what I was talking about. There's an option to toggle that behavior on or off, and which you use just depends on whether you do minor upgrades or major overhauls more.

Yep. It works and it seems to be a better option in the early game because, for instance, if you upgrape the colony ship without removing the functional parts, those components take up less space than if you added them to an empty model. Why is that?

They don't. One of the colony modules is a fake; there is only one 'real' one on the core colony ship.

You are right. I misread a number on the support units. My bad.

BUT

I do notice that it has an advanced support module on it that I have not researched yet.

Thanks Kyro, I just realized that you meant the main options screen when I thought this option was in the ship design screen.
I have found that option and turned it off, I can not believe it took me this long to search for this, I should have known that with such a good game that these types of option would exist for the player to decide which one suits them.
