AMD ATHLON PROCESSORS

I read about the AMD Athlon processor and wanted to know is there more than one version? I didn't see anywhere where it said that my processor is a dual core. Are all AMD Athlon's dual core or only the ones that have it designated in the title? Please, if anyone knows, reply to my post as I have crappy dial up service and any downloads over one "micromicrobit" takes about fifty thousand hours!!!

There are several different AMD Athlons around.

Quite old is AMD Athlon XP which uses Socket A, basicly you cannot get these from local store anymore.

More reacent AMD prosessors are named AMD64 and Sempron. There are couple variations here:

Basic AMD64 is a single core processor and AMD 64 X2 is dual core processor. You can have these both in two variations nowdays. Older Socket 939 processors use DDR memory and the newer Socket AM2 processors use DDR2 memory. AMD Sempron is more budget like processor which I don“t know much about

or you can surf here: AMD homepage

AMD Sempron is like AMD's Celerons, but AMD Semprons are better then Celerons. But suffice to say, both of them suck.

AMD has a lot of overlap in their product line. You can get an Athlon 64, Opteron, or X2 with virtually the same features. The main thing is to look at the specs and compare them. Things like process size, single or dual core, L2 cache size, FSB speed (aka hyper-transport), core speed, and of course price are what to look at. Processor technology advances rapidly so you always want the latest generation. Generally, the Athlon 64 is single core, the Opteron has the highest core speed, and the X2 is dual core. However, that isnt' always the case. Opterons and Athlon 64's are now available with dual core. Just look at the specs. Newegg is always good for that http://www.newegg.com.
