It sounds like your computer is doing something that would cause a "Blue Screen of Death" but is configured to automatically reboot instead. BSODs are usually a sign of a hardware or driver problem. You can see if there is a BSOD by doing the following:

Go to Control Panel->System Properties->Advanced Tab->Startup and Recovery Settings->uncheck "automatically restart" under System Failure. Then try running GC2, and chances are when it crashes instead of rebooting you'll get a blue screen with an error. Write down the information in the marked parts of the screen (the actual things it says will vary):

Then report back here. Ususally a quick google search of the error message will tell you what sort of hardware/driver problem you'r elooking at.

thx for fast response!

I have done, what you said. After i started GC II there was only a blue screen, without any reports, only blue!
What means that? I want to play...

Blank BSODs can be a real pain to troubleshoot, so first off I have to ask, how technical are you?

Just a guess here to start things off, but if you know how, the first thing you may want to try is disabling your motherboard's integrated sound in BIOS. If you don't know what this means, don't try as you can cause permanent (or at least difficult to reverse) harm to your computer. But initializing sound is the next thing the game would be doing after the debug.err ends, so that could well be where the problem lies.

Why not modify the pref.ini file to disable the sound when using GC2?

Because disabling it in BIOS would let him also test RoN with just one change

And if that is the problem, disabling it would be neccessary when installing a separate soundcard anyway. Plus, I don't know if disabling the sound in GC2's config will actually prevent it from initializing the drivers, or if it will simply not play any sound (that would be a question for Cari).

it sounds very difficult. Disabling the sound in BIOS?

uuuff...

My technical knowledge ist average. But why i have so much trouble with these games?

Rise of legends and GC II are the first games with this kind of troubles! I play since 2 years without any probs.

can you discribe the Bios changes a bit more detailed?

Best bet, if you don't know how to change BIOS settings, find a technical friend and ask them to do it for you.

one thing would be very interesting for me: im the first one with this kind of bug?
i mean with a blue screen without the described reports, only a blue screen?

Zerosea: Please post a debug.err file.

No, you're not the first one with a blank BSOD, I think. If you have done nothing in 2 years, thats a problem. Games constantly evolve in their requirements, if you haven't updated your computer in 2 years don't be surprised when something goes wrong.

You could have overheating or failing hardware if it's rebooting.  If you have recently installed new RAM or a new video card, make sure that it is properly seated and that there is no dust on the connectors.

Make sure that the Throttle GPU option is set to ON for GalCiv2.

Also, here is a link for a memory tester:

http://www.memtest.org/

You may also want to run chkdsk and disk defrag on your harddrive to make sure that you do not have any bad sectors on the hard drive.

I have not heard any reports of blank BSODs before this as relates to GC2, but many people have had them in varying circumstances with other games (I've had it once myself I think a while back). Like I said though, without something like the debug report that GC2 generates, they can be very annoying to pin down unless you know how to read the memory dumps windows generates when it crashes.

BSODs are very rarely a result of the software itself, but usually due to failing/overheating hardware or poor drivers.

When your computer suddenly stops and reboots, there's 3 most likely reasons.

Memory failure
Run the memory test that CariElf linked

Power supply failure
Either it's insufficient, failing or there could be a connection burning out somewhere. Under normal load it is fine but under heavy load it cannot bear the full current and this causes the power supply to shut down for safety reasons.

Overheating
Motherboard may have auto-shutoff enabled.

A problem I had this spring was my video card (6600GT PCI) has a seperate, external power connector. This external connector plugged in the same type of power that you plug in your hard drives, and that connection was loose. I could run Windows and older games (things that did not stress the video card) but when I started WoW, CoH or other graphics-intensive programs the system would spontaniously reboot.

So far, based upon your descriptions, it sounds like memory or PS are the cause.

Thanks for your help!

Can someone explain me, why only three games force this error? GC II, Rise of Legends and now a new one: Company of heroes (beta Demo). Other games (Far Cry, Battlefield 2, Half Life 2) running normal, without problems.

Thats my problem: The computer stops und reboots not every time- in my opinion this cannot be a hardware failure like the described memory failure ore power supply failure-otherwise the BSOD Problem would not only the cause for the reboot in this three games.

It seems like an software problem for me. whats your opinion?

(sorry for my english, im a german )

They probably just handle things a certain way where the other games do it differently. Just a quick check shows that RoL uses Miles Sound System as GC2 does. So it could just be that you have a poorly coded audio driver that does not get along with the version of Miles used in these games.

As I said, from the debug stopping just when it is supposed to initialize the sound, your sound driver is likely at fault. The simple way to test it is to simply disable the onboard sound.

If you cannot disable it in BIOS, it may also work if you disable it in windows. Try following these steps (I will give all names in english, so you'll need to use the german equivalent):

Go to Control Panel->System Properties.

On the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button.

There should be a section with an icon of a speaker named Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.

Under that section there should be an item named 'C-Media Rear Panel Audio' or something very similar.

Right click that, hit Disable. You should be prompted to reboot your computer, do so then try running GC2.

If that does not work you can turn your sound back on by going back to the same place and re-enabling it, then rebooting again.

Thanks guys, the problem is solved!

It was the sound card! But not poor drivers ore hardware failures. Someone (my brother or me) choosed at the settings 7.1 box system! But im playing only with headset.

Without you i would never look at the soundsettigs.

Thanks again! Now i can play GC II, yuhu
