Pirates? we know how to deal with pirates!

Or so I thought....... It was my first time playing CivII and it being a while since I spent the best part of 24hrs playing a game on CivI I decided to play it safe and have a CakeWalk game to blow the dust off! How I cackled like an evil genius off Bond when the super good alienskept giving me tribute and "Let's be friends" as I spent it on an all powerful military space station in their sector. Just so everyone can get an idea of who I think during the game, I end up with the evil menu's about 1/4 into the game. I'm in it for the money and the power people!!! Then all of a sudden, "As the galaxy is expanding" blah blah skip to the end of the message, is the population growth gonig up again?? "Space Pirates". Oh well, no hard there. Those simple little fighters are no match for the vessels I control. And it'll do some damage to my opponants. But, NNNNOOOO, they only appear in my sectors of space and destroy TWO of my mining bases, a trade route and pretty much every thing I throw at them!! I even build an Uber-ship that bankrupts me by buying three, about 15 mill each, where talking moding and hard-core protection. They get, not only a can of whip-ass handed to them, but a whole damn frieghter full!! Can anyone tell me, apart from running like hell and hiding.... How do you beat the damn pirates?????????

Pirates, I have come to learn, are easily defeated once you know how. I have not lost to pirates in months. They generally concentrate on one type of weapon and one type of defense, though the two are not always related, like beam and shields. All you need to do when they show up is create ships that use a weapon for which they have no defense, and that have a relatively strong defense for their weapon. Typically, the pirates will specialize in whatever weapon class the civ they broke out from does. If they are not prison pirates, but trade pirates, I've found that those usually specialize in beam weapons.

when do pirates appear? Aside from prison pirates(which had consisted in three small-sized craft i wiped out in a single turn) I never had trade pirates. and I've got alot of trade routes(playing neutral with master trade, i think it gives me like 15 trade routes total) Though I'm not stupid, and I try to keep a few ships on patrol near my most profitable trade routes.

There is a random event that occurs (I assume when trade in the galaxy as a whole increases to a certain point), and after that pirates spawn randomly.

Good Lord, don't say that! What if I say something wrong?? Yeah, the trade pirates don't happen that often (to me, anyway), but I do find they are typically stronger than the prison break pirates. Sometimes they occur after a civ has fallen, too, especially a minor civ.

I've seen pirates show up in 2 or 3 games. They're nasty buggers. Especially when they show up early. One time, I inadvertantly tried to kill a pirate ship and it had like 10 black hole eruptors on it...oops.
