Planets at night ???

How does one implement planetary night views and clouds (i.e. the shadow side and cloud overlay, respectively) ???

You mean you want to specify those textures for custom planets? AFAIK the game generates those itself (so it should "just work" without anything done on your part).

Yes, the night time lights are generated automatically by the game. They are based on the population on the planet and the area of inhabitable terrain.

It has something to do with your graphics card/graphics settings. I know I don't get them anyway.

I have never noticed this feature in over 30+ games. Never had a new minor race turn up in the galaxy either.

I would hazard a guess that my games r too short, all less then 9 yrs? Most around 3 yrs. As for the first one, 3 yr old pc so no pretty lights? Or not enough population growth?

The planet city lights have been improved for version 1.3. The latest beta includes this improvement.

You will be able to notice more lights if you turn down your Ambient Light setting in the Options screen.

I want to update to the beta but I don't want my metaverse games to have the cheating flag... Rallos-Zek told me that he had the Cheating flag when he tried the beta... so when does the full 1.3 version comes out?

sometimes for low population planets you may have to zoom in close to see them better.

The lights/atmospheres have never worked on my computer, yet on my laptop they work fine. If you have never seen them, then it must be your graphics card (only conclusion I can think of.)

Does this also work with custom png textures? Or does it require a particular format to show up- i.e. certain alpha channels?

Again, the lights are generated by the game engine--you do not need to provide a lights texture to get them on a custom planet.

While there is indeed a texture used for the lights, it wouldn't do much good messing with it as it applies to all planets and the game would still only pull squares out of it to light the built tiles on your planet (it doens't show the whole texture at once).

Well, so far I have never seen any lights ever on random planets (except on those planets that have their own night texture provided). That's why I asked twice
