Crazy spin

Ok, I just put together this pc:

CPU: AMD 64 X2 3800+
MOBO: Asus MSN-SLI Deluxe
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Hard Drive: SATA 320GB (3320620AS)
Memory: OCZ 1 GB

Ehh the rest escapes me. Anyway, all the drivers are brand new, I have version 1.2 of the game running, and the ship graphics in the menus when you are setting up a new game spin like crazy. INSANE spin. Also when I scroll with my mouse in the game to move the main view, it scrolls away all to hell and becomes a jumping invisible piece of space (difficult to describe). Finally, I noticed the planet itself in colony view spins like mad as well. There are no video options that look remotely helpful. Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?
