I never played GC1, so I have no experience of them. They sound cool though.

I like the idea of there being whole races of space-capable creatures along the lines of Species 8472 bioships but are naturally occuring and growing. They can be peacful or violent, attack or defend trade, some may even become pets and become ships. Or I just want to blow the crap out of them. *BANG! ZAP! BOOM!*

Yea, I would like to see space monsters make a reappearance, perhaps they could have a planet where they breed, once u conquer it no more space monsters? Several different varietys would be cool and interesting.

An option at the start of the game to vary them from none to abundant would make everyone happy.

Let's add it to future wish list!

I would like to see them. Good suggestions Meglobob. It could be taken to great lengths, like having to work with other races to stop the space-bug scourge etc. Also different critters that destroy different resources, "Argh Starvation!"

Bring forth the infestation (on a wish list)

Never seen them before (cos never played GC1) but they do sound good... Can't really think of a reason why they shouldn't be in here... (That means yes I'd like to see them   )

Id love to see the 'space shrimp' back..having played GC1 extensively thats what they looked like to me. And I liked having them around because certain AI races considered them threats and spent a good amount of time and resources early in the game to search these monsters out to kill them. They can be a pain however when in your own territory going after your ships and starbases..but when its in an enemies space all the better! I also remember dl a mod 'space monster breeding' a technology and you could supposedly grow these things and send them off into another races territory to wreak havoc..i dont think it ever worked correctly though(the space monster graphic was bugged).

Yes, if they don't stay on the same systems as they did in GalCiv 1. It has sometimes realy runied my games from the start. It'll be nice if they appear not only with anomaly but randomly in the game near unhabited planets.

I think that the space monsters look like the dread lords. Maybe the Developers of Galciv 2 used the same desighn to create the dread lord ships.

How sick would it be if these new Space Monsters could spread and breed all over the galaxy. They could inhabit level 0 planets and hop from place to place. If they were left unchecked, they would turn into a serious problem, attacking and destroying any ships in their way. I couldn't imagine anything funnier then watching an enemy civilization get slowly exterminated by these monsters.

You are on to something there, Infoceptor--the game could definitely use an equivalent to the barbarians of the Civilization series. Space pirates would probably be the best bet for that, though.

As for the space monsters: they're one of the bajillion game features that were left out in the end, but still have remnants hidden in the XML. You know, along with Terror Stars, Employment, Antimatter Power Plants, the Starship Foundry, Pain Amplifiers, the Historical Preserve, Life Force Power, the Starbase Upgrade Center, Cabinet and Government "abilities", Crime, ships docking at Starbases, Upgraded Starports, some kind of S_Omega XML tag for planetary improvements, and numerous techs that served as prerequisites for all that stuff (such as Antimatter Power, The Dark Side, and Artificial Satellites).

In fact, the space monsters were going to function similarly to escaped Galactic Prison convicts: a UP resolution would put a zoo on someone's planet, and then the monsters would break out and start wrecking havoc.

Like all that other stuff I mentioned, though, there were too many complications and not enough time to resolve them. I imagine they're planning on finishing up with those space monsters for the Dark Avatar expansion, though, like they are with terror stars.

NO!! and i repeat it again NO!

The damned things in GCI came in from the beginning and meeting one early on meant certain doom for your flagship. Once we worked out where the code for them was a whole load of us removed the damn things. Not wanted back in GCII unless they are made optional!

Now if they make the minors behave like GCI and expand....... Hell that's for a different thread

YES YES YES. The best part would be that folks that cheese the anomoly system would suffer the most...

I liked the potential drawback of exploring an anomoly. You could also lure them to attack an AIs starbases in GC1.

They were probably a little over-powered in GC1, but I would love to see them make a return.

I would like it if they had a planet they breed on. And if you conquered that you could build them. It should be optional like the minor races.

Plus they could be varied, unlike GC1

They were always a planetoid.

No!!!!

If you never played GC1 you just don't understand. If you did and you want them back then I guess you want cheating AI back as well. Shure can't beat the good ole days huh? Bah.

That sounds suspiciously like the "Dread Lords on Parade" custom game.

I played GC1 a lot and Really Hated the Space Shark when they showed up in my space not so much when they showed up in the other guys space.

I really do think we need a Random Threat in the space because right now everyone just builds up bases and fleets then attacks one another there is no random element.

Not counting Pirates personally i have rarely ever seen them appear in the game and usally by the time they do they are under powered and no threat to me or much of anyone else.

Now having an option to make it vary them from none to abundant would make everyone happy (Good suggestion Meglobob)

Maybe they could grow in strenght as they "Age" so each coulpe weeks they are alive they get stronger as well as heal. Could also include diffent size models just like the ships do.

Space monsters are an intriguing idea. If they were non-factional and provided additional strategic depth to the game, they could definitely 'work'.

For example:

There could be creatures that wander around killing everything they encounter (space amoebas; swarms of interstellar insects or nano-swarms, etc.)

There could be creatures that wander around and inadvertently help ships they come in contact with (strange cloudlike creatures that repair ships; energy creatures that adhere to ships, making them stronger; etc.)

Defending, escorting or luring enemies into, away, or across the paths of these creatures would be an interesting strategic consideration. You could defend your empire with ships on one front, and depend on the Gigantic Space Amoeba of Doom to do its job defending your empire on another front. Or, conversely, you could employ a benevolent space creature's wandering path into your attack strategy.

There could even be really powerful, non-roaming creatures that guard/live in certain 'hotspots' (nice planets, asteroid fields, etc.), which would make the acquisition of those 'hotspots' a lot more difficult.

You create the "aphrodisiac starbase", that attracts every dangerous space shark, right next to the Altarian's homeworld..

Doom for the poor chumps your flagship led the monster too...
