Showld I give up techs to ally?

I have 3 allies in this game but I am very technologically advanced with respect to them, so what should I do? Should I give up all my techs to them (will they give them to others? can they break the alliance?) Or should I sell it to them for huge amount of money, potentially bankrupting them? What do you think?

I usally trade techs for money or other techs i need if they have any i don't like other weapon/armour branches you are not exploring. I never trader high end tech but i have no problem trading lesser techs to help out or drain the $ from friends and foes.

If they're in a war with a powerful enemy you could give them advanced defences against the enemy weapons especially if they're using a different set to you.

If you are winning it doesn't matter... If you are losing against a common foe then then give them away. That way as a group you'll research much quicker. At present your allies are prob researching something you have. If they have the same techs as you then they will research something you haven't got. At least it works that way in the campaign... I personally only use alliances to "take people out of the equation" while I kill someone else

Hell don't give up your techs make your allies work for it! They never give you techs, hell they didn't even research alliances to ally with you, and besides they ARE going to go bankrupt anyway, the AI always uses way to many ships. So make them pay, that money's going to be a lot better with you than them.

I give them all but a few techs. That way if they get something new i can trade my techs for it.

If you want to help them out with tech, you could try giving away some of your older, near obsolete ships. Odds are these will still be better than their latest.

The problem with giving away tech is that they may very well turn around and sell it to somebody you'd rather they didn't!

As an aside - I always give away planetary improvements especially soil enhancement etc. to anyone I'm going to invade soon.

Has two effects 1) stops them building useful stuff and 2) I get a higher PQ planet to take over.

So the negative side is that they can trade them out to my enemy? Are there other negative effects? Can they break the alliance for example by one my ally attacking another my ally?

Are there other negative effects?

Right now I am stronger and bigger then any of them, and I do not afraid to loose to any of them, what I afraid is that
A) if they really trade to someone outside the alliance and
B) if they can break from alliance and form their own alliance that will be stronger then me. Can they do it?

I always give away the Trade techs. In the end, it helps you out as they will start sending freighters your way before you can even build a freighter to send out. Money is money and I always need it early on.

In one game, losing badly to the Torians, I gave them Industrial Sectors (I think they had Enhanced Factories at the time) and it essentially stalled them (and ruined their economy) for the 20 or so turns it took me to get my defenses together and muster an offense.

So, tech trading can be a good thing.

But I never give my best techs away...

I give the AI Ally and Enemy all techs for free except weapons/trade/alliance and the last 4 techs on the research branch.

What I would like to know is if I supply the AI with a ships with tech's that they don't have them selfs do they get just the ship or all the knowledge of the techs that are on it?.

Just the ships.

I usually trade techs for techs or money, I don't try to bankrupt my ally.
Also, if I am not going for a complete galactic domination I'd sell them some warships or gift them.

I usually trade everything but Weapons, defences,Planetary invasion,Diplomacy ,and Engines . Then i always trade for their techs I dont have or I get the credits or i get both from every other race . by denying them the weapons ,defenses ,soldier bonus ,Logistics ,and diplomacy , I dont have to worry about my ship builds being compromized ,the enemy having as high of soldiering bonus as me, or being diplomatically superior to me .or having huge fleets.keeping the trade balance in my favor assures I get the best possible outcome of trading .

I'm glad they only get the ships and not the tech, I've Modded some of the techs (e.g. Aereon Missile Defence absorbs 1000, Boom Ray and Blackhole weapons 10000 damage) and I don't want the AI getting access to that knowledge. Overwise instead of 1 of my ships agains't 50-100 AI ships it will be all out war.

Trade for Influence Points. It usually doesn't help much, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

I often sell the basic techs to the AI, both allies and, if I'm trying to make peace, with enemies. In times of war I often supply my allies with defense and offense techs to help 'em out with enemies; I just try to make sure that the techs I sell are relatively harmless should my allies decide to use them against me. I usually sell the minor races as many techs as I can, since they never seem to declare war on me, and I'm usually content to let them be (except for the Snathi, those furry little buggers).

I won't trade anything with Soldiering, Engine speed or weapons.

Everything else I'll only trade if I want something from them, or if an ally or friend is in trouble I'll help beef up their defensive technologies or send some obsolete weapons

I say trade as much as possible. Except for weapons, speed, and diplo. Other then that the defense techs are ok to trade for just make sure you dont trade the defense to anyone of the main weapons you are using, ie. your using, and researching mass drivers dont trade any of the armor techs.

Unless i'm going for conquest victory i freely give techs to allies.

Yes, my enemies are so reluctant to give me any techs usually... that is until i start taking them, world by world.

If i am worried about someone trading a Tech to an Enemies i usally do mass trading in one turn by that i mean in one turn i will see who needs what from my Tech list find one or two items then trade it to everyone even enemies.

Ex: Advance Life Support is needed by 4 or 5 races not counting minors.
Some are enemies but i will trade it to all so that i get the $ or Tech for it and then no longer worry about someone else trading it to my enemies after i trade/give it to them.

You know what's weird, I usually supply the snathi with some military tech and I help them in wars, they're just so funny looking.
