campaign ai weaponless ships

I assume this is a bug and not just really, really bad ai. I played the first mission of the campaign on painful, but it was really easy because the drengin did not make any ships with actual weapons on them. They just put stacks of 'defenders' with no armor or weapons on all their planets and waited for me to come massacre them. Didn't attack or send anything out but constructors. Then when I conquered one of their planets, I stole Plasma Weapons (!!!) technology from them. Gee guys, that might have come in handy. If they'd used it at all I would have gotten crushed. And that's when I quit and came on here. Maybe I've had a few unlucky games, but I don't feel like I"m playing the same game all the reviews glowed about. But it seems like this company is fairly responsive and they don't use starforce so hopefully that will change.

I wonder if you got caught by the bug that sometimes sets AI intelligences very low on the higher difficulty levels...? Did you set each intelligence level individually or just the overall difficulty?

post the debug.err it shows the intelgiance of them.
Also weaponless ships actualy do have a use. Cant invade a planet with one.

I had the same thing on the 3rd mission in the campaign with a 'tough' difficulty. the AI would build ships with mass shields (progressively larger shields) but wouldn't add even the tiniest laser...

as the User starts with 3 attack ships in the 3rd misson, I just shipped them off to the AI's home planet and blew away anything that existed. you can have all the shileds in the world, it just means it takes longer to kill you if you don't have a weapon yourself.

According to Brad, the campaign AI has been intentionally crippled so as to not be so difficult for new players as it was at release (since generally people will try the campaign first).

I can understand that but, the tough or painfull ai building ships with no weapons is just stupid, I could understand that at cakewalk difficulty but tough or painfull. Actually to me that would be so easy it would be hard.

The topic of this forum must be a bad omen, after I got off the internet I played GalCiv2 and the AI didn't have any weapons on there warships!!!

And even more annoying it was on regular games, not the campaign.

same problems here, in the campaign and in a single game. the Drengin and Drath both seem to have this problem. I was trying the campaign on 'masochistic', and the drengin had phasor technology before I could even research planitary invasion, yet my cargo ships parked outside of their planets with a mini-laser crushed any ships they built, since they had NO weapons.

In a possibly related note, sometimes the drengin ships would have a 3 armor, and my 1 beam ships would destroy them in 3 shots that did 5 damage each! This is with no military mining, no weapon upgrades, no anomolies, and no experienced crew.
However, if I stacked my ships, they would take forever to get kills... the lasers suddenly could not puncture the armor!
