Mass ship upgrading

I usually upgrade ALL my ships at one time. Once I get a far superior ship design I just upgrade away. My question is this. When it gives me the price for the 30+ ships im upgrading, it says some huge number like 18000. Once I click upgrade all, i only lose maybe 2000. Whats up with this? Im certain Im pushing the first option which means I dont have a payment.

If you're playing at Normal or below and have little reserve cash, you can spend all you like and your treasury will automatically return to a minimum of -2000 the next turn. Not sure exactly what your situation is but it sounds like that may be your case.

Not to imply you're stupid (because I overlook stuff like this all the time!), but are you sure you didn't have a lease option checked?

I apologize in advance for hijacking this thread a little bit, but on a related question:

Is there a "one click" way to upgrade all ships of the same type in a single fleet?

There are times that I have lots of ships (>50) of a single type, most of which are defending planets. But some of them are on the offense fleeted up for battle. I only want to upgrade the ships in the fleet, not all of the others (saves cash).

Right now I'm doing it in the fleet management screen, and it requires 4 clicks per ship to upgrade (click on the ship, click on upgrade, select the upgraded ship type, click OK). Thats a lot of mousing to do for several 5-7 ship fleets.

Thanks for any assistance.

Nope. It's all or one, and one or all.

Seems like I have missed something in this game... How do you upgrade all outdated ships at once?

To upgrade all ships at one time, when you do your upgrade, look under the picture of the ship on the left. There's a box that says "Upgrade All Ships of This Type". Click that, and they all upgrade (watch the cost though!)

I have a related "upgrade" question.

Last night I designed a ship type that I wanted to upgrade. I did two different things - I created an "upgrade" of that ship type in the ship design tool, and I also created a brand new design based on the original, but not using the "upgrade" button in the tool.

Here's sort of the basics:
I went from Stinger 3s to Harpoon 2s
I went from Impulse type engines (7 pc/wk) to Warp engines (10 pc/wk)
I added better anti-mass driver armor.

When I went to do an Upgrade of an individual ship, it was about 1/4 the cost to change the original to the brand new design than it was to change the original to the upgraded design.

Can anyone explain to me why that might be?

Just 18000 ? That's nothing add another 0 and you'll get the picture of why it took me 60 turns post-upgrade to brake even again

hm- well actualy I still haven't broken even yet... darn stupid Idea it was to ammount a 180.000 credit debt, huh. Espeicaly since I am at war with those darn Drengin now and can't replace my ships
