Military Starbases - Do Bonuses Stack?

Question: Do attack/defense bonuses stack when combat occurs under the influence of multiple military starbases, or is only the highest bonus taken? (The answer should be put in the Wiki I think under "Military Starbase").

I have never used military starbases in my games but I know that economic starbases do stack.

Yup they do! Is real nice to have multiple military bases near each other at times. I usually setup a defensive ring of these at times and boy do they make one heck of a difference. Also, be sure to park some ships on them as they will help defend the bases from attack. Works out well for me.

Just make sure that the ships have at least 1 attack & 1 defense so that they get to use the respective bonuses...

That's good to know. I was thinking: make some cheap ships with one weapon and one defense and they all get pumped up with the starbases. Research starbase assist techs to the max and then if you are playing defensively don't worry about all the time to get real weapons and armor until you have an advantage. Going to test this vs. the AI.

Also wondering if I can have a fleet protecting a planet without the Orbital Defense upgrade (the special building)? No matter how many ships I build, they seem to do nothing while on a planet square. They just dock there and take a beating one by one until all are gone. I noticed the AI can surround itself with ships on higher levels so you have to break the barrier. I was thinking of using 4 military bases around a planet in each sector as a defensive move, and 4 large ships to fill in the remaining gaps, then smaller ships for added firepower.

You have to have an Orbital Fleet Manager in order for your ships to defend a planet as a fleet. Of course, if the AI is using fleets it may actually be beneficial in some ways to have your ships unfleeted--that way it takes more moves to destroy them and thus gives you more time to send reinforcements.

Also, just in case there's any confusion, military starbase bonuses also apply to ships orbiting planets within the stabase's area of effect (or at least they do in 1.2).

Well, if the AI attacks with fleets and you don't have the Orbital Fleet Manager your ships are pretty much toasted since it's a single ship against one fleet of them. Of course if you have single capital ships defending a planet and the AI attacks you with a small / medium ship fleet, you may still have a chance.

If your fleet would've been killed by their fleet anyway, then it's useful that they'll need to spend three movement points to kill your ships separately. Say they have a stack of nasty ships and some transports, all with two MPs. You have three fighters and a few freighters on your planet; if your logistics limits your fleets to 3, then it'd take them 2 MPs to kill all your ships. But otherwise, it'd take 6(so on turn 3 of the attack they'd be able to move their transports in).

Personally though, I wouldn't want to be in that situation. Usually when I'm outgunned I make my ships very very fast, then target their weaker transport fleets.
