Iconians in the Campaign

I've made it to the mission "apocolypse" and out of nowhere the Iconians have joined the cause. The game explained teh relationship between the humans, Alterians, and Arceans, while I had to work to get the torians on my team.

Does the campiagn go into any storyline-ish detail about the Iconians? I know that there is an alternate mission to Achilles Heel that involves the Iconians and Yor, does anyhting important happen there?

You have to lose the very first mission of the campaign in order to get the mission where you recruit the Iconians. It tells a bit about their origins and relationship with the precursors and the Yor.

its actually pretty hard to lose the very first campaign mission, just wait long enough and the Altarians could do the dirty work for you. Although it might be possible to force a 'you have lost the mission' by surrendering to the drengin.

Alternately, break your alliance with the altarians, give them all your tech, then attack them

By the end of that first mish, I had ships that (later in the campaign) took down the DL Dreadnoughts after being outnumbered 2-1

Or you could retire at turn 1 and spare yourself some time.

Thanks. I've heard that the Thalan also are involved in an alternate mission, which one do I have to lose to get there?

No, for a lot of the missions there is an alternative mission to do if you fail. It's a nice idea, reduces the chance of someone getting stuck on a particular mission. Some of the missions will kill you off if you fail them though.

Unfortunately, you get the same ending whatever you do, or at least I assume you do, since I beat all of them and didn't get a particularly good ending.

Are you kidding me?

I thought the ending was excellent.
Am getting tired of the same lame endings being used every time.

It wasn't really an ending so much as a "To Be Continued".

All roads lead to Rome: You can take multiple paths to get through the campaign, but they all, so far as I know, go to the same ending.
