100% out of memory?

It seems that whenever I get advanced in a gigantic game, I can no longer save as it will result in a 100% Out of memory error. Ive tried all the fix'arounds ive seen in the other posts, but no luck.I have 2gigs of ram and swap file set to 4gig, still no luck

also, I'd suggest doing some normal computer maintenance if you haven't already, such as running disk cleanup, defragmentor.

did this happen before you downloaded 1.3 beta? because if its stable with 1.2, then its probably the beta patch

Try reducing your swap file to 1.5GB and see if that helps.
And if it is not already, make it static.

Tried reducing the swap to 1500, but no dice.

Im gonna try and bring up the old 1.2 Doesnt appear to be a problem till I get to the later stages of the game, so it will be awhile before I can see if it happens again

Try to keep an eye on the in-game date. I am curious as to how far into the game you are getting.

My games are usually over by 2229-2230 or so. I have never run out of memory with this game, even on a gigantic map with 9 races. I have 3GB of ram with a 768MB static swap file.

I'm also having memory problems now with the 1.3 beta. I've sent in the quick save and debug error. Not only that, but saved games are now taking 10 minutes to load, and subsequently CTD.

This memory problem has been with GalCiv2 from the word go, and my question is " why the hell is it still not fixed" what sort of memory management are they using on this turkey? I mean this game compared to most other popular games would be classed as a game of tidily winks.

i never really had to much memory problems with the previous builds, i was at 500 mb ram only for a good while.
now i have 1.5G ram, i run the 1.3 beta test, largest map, most stars, most planets to live on and most star systems with 9 oppononts.

the game did crash, well crash i couldn't go to the menu anymore or invade a planet. i had to save the game on my own every 20 minuts before i did another turn, sometimes restarting the game, load my game and continou, this is how i played the last 1.5 hours of the game but i finished the gigantic map.

As near as I can figure out, there are database pointer issues that cause it to consume all available RAM. I notice it consistently using 512 Megs for what? Come on guys, I can run Oracle 9 or 10 in half that. For comparison sake a full blown install of Solaris and running a near real time rendering engine takes less ram than Windows and GC2. It's not video, so it's gotta be poor application design. I'm getting sick of it running out of RAM and having to save every time I do something significant. As much as I like the game, it's not worth the trouble it takes to run. I've put it on the shelf in case they ever get it fixed and I've deleted the expansion off my must buy list. Good thing it's not a 64 bit app

As a VP IT and CTO for many years, I am quite aware what developing large apps is like. I mean really, I've built some apps in the 20 Million range. If I ever released something like this to the 10,000 users in my org I'd be golden parachuted out of there so fast my arm would be sore from the false "thank you" "miss you" handshakes.

Putting it in perspective, I have 40 bucks in the game and a bit of leisure time. No great loss. Just put it aside and play something else. As much as I like the corporate philosophy here at Stardock it doesn't make up for a crap experience with the product.

I had originally posted this in its own thread but I'll add it here as this post is getting more traffic and, hopefully, more attention.


I'm trying to save a game in the late stages of galactic domination. The altarians just begged me for peace and when I tried to save after the end of that turn, the game froze in "Saving Game" screen. I tried to reboot and redo this a couple times but the same thing happened.

When I ctrl-alt-del and jump back to windows there is an "Out of memory" error pop-up on the screen. I find that hard to believe since I'm running with 2gigs of RAM.

Here is are the last few lines of the debug, after the save is started. This save was when I tried it with the quick save feature. The same happens when I use the regular save. I haven't played enough turns to see if autosave will trigger it. I'm assuming that it will.

It looks like it's those two assert errors in memman.cpp so it's possible that there is no setting you can change that will solve the problem. I'd look at that file myself but my own C++ knowledge probably doesn't extend that far.

That's why they call it a beta.

We should start a petition asking Stardock to stop tarting GalCiv2 up and concentrate on the memory issue. I for one am fed-up with putting days into a game only for the stupid game to go top itself.

I all the time I have been playing this game, I have never seen that happen.

And I do not think it is quite that common an occurrance in the overall population of players.

Are all other system drivers and bios's up to date? Sometimes a mb bios update can cure things like that.

Two problems stand out.
You have very old video and audio drivers, they need to be updated.

Your game resolution is higher than your desktop resolution, which is a big no-no.

That message indicates a problem with video. Try running the game at your desktop resolution, after updating the drivers.

Having the same problem with the game on a gigantic map with abundant planets -- somewhere around 400 habitable worlds. About every 2-5 turns get the out of memory error and have to reload latest save. i set autosave on every turn so that helps. And I upped my virtual memory from 2 gig to 4 gig after the 2nd time I got the error and that helped some getting me 1 or 2 turns more before the error. Problem started showing up when I had conquered about half the map. Playing 1.2 update. Didn't have the problem with games that just had average amount of habitable planets -- and the games were better -- easiest game i've had yet -- last time i play a game for a high score.

Same problem here, only happened to me after the 1.3 Beta (no problems on 1.2)

Then again, this is the first time I've set EVERYTHING to abundant on a Gigantic map. I have 2GB of memory and get the "out of memory" bug whether I try and save manually or use the autosave.

It also results in my save file disappearing. This only seems to have an impact when I'm trying to save, as I can progress to the next turn without saving (i.e. had to disable the auto-save) but I could not then manually save after the turn was completed, still froze up on me.

It's a bug in the loading code that is causing a dynamic array to be created much larger than necessary.  Then, when the game is saved again, that large size is saved into the game. If you were then to load that save game, the array would be created even larger, and so on until Windows refuses to allocate any more memory.    So you can avoid it if you don't have to save and reload.

I have fixed this bug here, and the fix will be in the next update.

Thanks for the update. Will our existing save games be corrected in the next update, or will they be no good?

I won't even ask WHEN the update is scheduled, since I know how that goes, heh heh.
