Ship Naming Strategy: What do you do?

Ship Naming Strategy: What do you do?

Ship building, it's almost a game within a game. Trying to squeeze in all the firepower, defense, speed, range, etc you can while maintaining some modicum of affordability as well as the asthetic aspect of making a ship look menacing. However, when you've completed your masterpiece, what do you call it? I find that I simply can't let myself spend 45 minutes (or more) on a single ship design and not give it an equally unique and well-thought-out name.

How do you all name your ships?

I tend to pick a "theme" for a given game, sometimes themes repeat across multiple games. I've created multiple custom races, sometimes those are based on real-world ideas. I have a "Roman" race and a "Minoan" (pre-classical greek) race. Ship naming for those is pretty easy: Pilum, Scuta, Phalanx, Gladius, etc for the Romans and Hoplite, Minotaur, Fury, etc for the Greek. Improvements to existing designs I'll "upgrade", e.g. Fury Mark IA.

In my current game, I'm using a custom race not based on much of anything. I've been using a "Sharks and Rays" theme for my names. Ships with names like Mako, Squalus, Carcaradon, Manta, and the like now grace my fleets.

I've never had an enemy fleet turn tail and run based simply on artistic menace (the 5 doom ray cannons have turned a few though) but I'm hoping one day to hear cries of "Oh noes! The Dogfish Killers are coming!" ecoing from Altaria as my fleets approach.

My classes are usually organized like this:

T-Beam-Md-1a (Terran, beam-equipped, medium, model 1 mark a)
T-Troop-2b (Terran, troop-carrying, model 2 mark b)

and so forth. I name all the ships in a class after common themes, such as:

Jewels (Ruby, Tourmaline, Amber)
Battles (Trafalgar, Vittoria, Sedan, Shiloh)
Leaders (Grant, Nelson, Graf Spee, Davout, Friedrich der Grosse, Scipio Africanus)
Gods & Heroes (Hercules, Ajax, Daedalus)
Monsters (Minotaur, Chimera, Poltergeist, Vampire)
Predators (Lion, Barracuda, Python, Raptor)
Constellations (Andromeda, Draco, Scorpio, Bootes)
Heroics: (Invincible, Superb, Valiant, Constitution, Dauntless, Intrepid)

I use a pennant number system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennant_number). If the ship distinguishes itself (or is already valuable enough for distinction) then I append a name to it.

So for example:
PD 122 Prometheus
Plasma Destroyer, 'Destroyer' denoting high attack and speed /no defense.

LRSS 3 Hawkeye
Long Range Sensor ship.

HGD 94 Sparta
Home Gunner Deflector, 'Home' denotes short-range.

This system comes in handy as the game's default naming system assigns numbers automatically. With a few exceptions, I design each ship for the situation I find myself in so I normally empty my ship library after each long game. This system provides me with a decent reference system so long as the shipyard doesn't get too cluttered.

The absolute best thing about naming ships, I find, is when another race asks for help and you send them your ships, and then you watch your HGD 94 Sparta under torian colours desperately defending toria from the DoK (again...).

It depends on my mood whether the names are serious, functional, or comical. I've used things like "Anubis", "Leviathan", "Bahamut", "Tiamat", "SR-Col1", "War Bastard", "Scout1", "NutBuster" etc.

My problem is that i have to many ships. I usually have twice as many ships as ALL the AI players combined. because of this, i just name my fleets. those names are usaully the region or regions that that fleet defends and or attacks.

I'm one of the boring ones -
Fighting ships get names like L 9-3-M24 (Large hull, 9 speed, 3 range, 24 missile attack). Sometimes I'll add a "mk2" or something if I make a minor change like to defense or some such.

Other ships (constructors and such) get names like Survey 13-7 (survey ship with 13 speed, 7 range), or Constructor 36-5 (36 speed, 5 range) etc. The speeds are all base speeds not modified speeds. Ho hum....

If you need ideas for names and you play in windowed mode, have a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_navies

Most of the links on that page link to lists of ship names for each navy. Alternatively, have a thesaurus nearby. Then once you think up a ship name you instantly have eight more!
