Odd

Tutorials?

When i started playing Gal Civ 2 it gave me a message that my video cards MIGHT not be advanced enough. But when it began the opening cinematic played fine, so did the opening campaign. and when i start a new game it seems to work fine too.

But when i click on the tutorial part, the voice spekaing to me is messed up.

It keeps stopping and starting again. ITs extremely hard to try and listen too.

Anyone know why?

Please go to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2 (or wherever you installed the game at), open the debug.err file you find there in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

The other thing i've noticed is that some of the event videos like colonizing planets or meeting anomalies is also choppy.

So i figured i'd need to try updating my video card.

The Problem is i'm not the most knowledable about exactly what to search for.

I looked through some FAQ's i could find.

"ATI 9800 Pro"

is this something i can go and download or is it something innert in the computer.

In the past when updating, i sorta bumbled around what i thought was the correct Driver at the Nvidia site.

hmmm... your computer is almost an exact replica of my old computer. I had a Nvidia GeForce 5200. Since this card works off AGP and not PCI express, the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro would be your best upgrade. To get a higher card you can find both Radeon and Nvidia that have AGP cards higher than 9600, but again now ur limited to the power supply unit (PSU) feeding both the CPU and The Graphics Card itself. If you are going to upgrade to the Radeon 9600, its about $50 or probably cheaper. All you do is uninstall your video drivers, turn off computer, look for the graphics card in the computer, take it out, plug in 9600, install software, enjoy! But anything higher, like the 9800 pro or the X300 SE will require a bigger power supply. Im baseing all the assumptions off the fact that your powersupply is small. If you have a bigger one by all means have fun.

Drivers for your GeForce 5200 search here: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Good luck dealing with your troubles.

The video driver you have is close to 2 years old, and the audio driver you have is over 3 years old:

Card Name: GeForce FX Go5200 (Omega 1.6693) (Q)
Driver Date: 10/29/2004 16:50:00

Description: Realtek AC97 Audio
Driver Date: 5/14/2003 13:44:06

You should update those and see if that helps fix your issues.

Thanks, that sounds simple enough. It should fix a lot of my problems.

But how would I go about doing that?

Other than the Nvidia website, i have no idea where to search for.

man do i feel stupid...

Since you have a GeForce FX Go, I'm assuming you have a laptop? Maybe from Dell? nVidia should have the drivers for your video card. The sound card is on-board, so you want to go to your motherboard manufacturer (if it's a desktop). If it's a laptop, then go to the manufacturer you bought it from. Assuming it's Dell, they have a simple place to go to for drivers where you just put in the model information, or some other information and they'll link you to everything.

Do like drawfour said.
It's sometimes better to look at your desktop/laptop manufacturer's website.

Or go on the Realtek website.
Or a simple search on the internet will lead you to this: Realtek AC Audio driver

(one time I will have to learn how to make links on this forum )

edit: oh.. so simple

I think that the Omega Drivers are probably the best ones for his laptop, because it's very similar to mine; he's using the latest drivers available.  I don't have much trouble with it, but I force it to run in hardware acceleration.

Just set these options under video in your prefs.ini:

NoPointSprites=1
GfxForceNoPointSprites=1

You may also have to turn off Anti-aliasing.
