Deleting all ship designs

Is there way to delete all your custom ship designs without going into a game, researching the right techs to get them and then deleting them?

Yes there is.

Head down to:

C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships

and delete all files in that folder.

Thank you, I had searched the GalCiv2 directory in program files for a way, but it never occured to me that it might be in My Documents.

Yes, this is quite annoying. Especially as you can only have one game on the go at a time (it goes screwy if you delete ship designs and then reload an old game).

I really want Stardock to fix it so ship designs are saved in sub-folders of saved games (menu option maybe?). That way, if you want to, you don't have to keep cleaning out the shipyard manually.

Another useful feature would be to turn off core designs so that you can start with a blank slate every game. (Obviously, except for the two ships at the start).

Please Stardock! Pretty please with sugar on!

Does anyone actually use the core designs anyway?

Just the one colony ship that you start with. After that, it's all my own designs. I just click the "user" tab so that the core ships don't even show up in the lists.

I usually obsolete the core designs anyway because they clutter up the shipyard governor list.

Do they stay obsolete in new games as well then?

No, they show up again. Can't delete core ships. Wish you could. Personally, I don't there should be any core ships. They're useless and only serve to confuse things. Also wish the game would not try to "remember" ship designs from one game to the next. Causes all kinds of problems when upgrading a current design. I've done upgrades and had the ship revert to some version in an older game. Any why would you *not* use the same name for an upgraded design like the game tells you too. What's the point of that? To have a bizillion different names for same thing? And when you do use a different name, the only way to upgrade all the current ships of that type is to click on each one and select upgrade. Not very do-able when you have over a hundred of them. Now I always clear out the "ships" directory on new games. Still have problems using the same name for upgraded designs every now and then (ships reverting to old designs). I love this game and I think the ship editor is amazing, but honestly, this stuff is just brain damaged software design.

I always click the "user" tab and ignore the core ships. Even at game start, before I have researched engines and life support I can make a faster colony ship (using multiple engines) with better range (using multiple basic life support) than the core colony ship. All the core ships have poor speed and range!

As smjjames said the core ships will clutter up the shipyard governor so it is probably best to obsolete them as they appear. Some of them are cool to look at (i.e., the core colony ship looks better than my no-nonsense colony ships) but otherwise, are awfull!

I make use of the core designs. While I don't build them, I will use the upgrade button with them so I can make them good gameplay wise, while keeping their good appearances.
