Please fix research facilities upgrade path (NLCs)

Problem: Depending on what techs you research first, the automatic upgrade of research facilities is faulty in respect to Neutrality Learning Centers. The computer might choose to upgrade to invention matrices or Discovery Spheres, although Neutrality Learning Centers are available.
A huge annoyance on bigger maps since you have to do it all manually.

Fix: Have the computer check for highest value in buildings, this would make sure research facilities are automatically upgraded to NLCs, not other buildings.

This isn't how the game works, it follows a path. NLCs are NOT on the path. I think it was tested so that they auto-upgrade from anything in 1.2, but I may be mistaken. Either that or the "upgrade from" field is borked, and will accept only one entry. But the computer has no way of doing what you want it to, AFAIK.

Seems to work fine for me in 1.2, as soon as they become available all my research buildings auto-upgrade to them.

As with me as well. I'm playing on 1.2.

Of course, Xeno Ethics and NLC's are some of the first things I research once Xeno Ethics gets to around 20 turns...

what happens is they upgrade to NLCs unless you've obtained invention matrix and discovery sphere- then it upgrades to those instead.

discovery sphere allows for omega research, so it's not that you wouldn't ever research this path after obtaining NLCs

Or if your going for a Tech victory, or your trying to maximize your research score.

Until they fix it, it would be best not to research Invention Matrix or Discovery Sphere until you have developed most of your planets (trade for Discovery Sphere later).

True, but that won't prevent the annoying upgrade path when you get planets from other civs.

You can fix it yourself very easily.

Open PlanetImprovements.XML in Notepad or Wordpad, or any other XML editor of your choice.

Scroll down to the last entry, which is the Neutrality Learning Center.
Change the UpgradeTarget to Discovery Sphere.

With that change, any building after (and including) Research Acadamy will upgrade correctly to the NLC.

Well I am pretty sure that won't work for metaverse games  as modifying the xml files will certainly award you a cheater flag for that game.

I read that modding it would be easy, but I hesitated because of the metaverse issue. Now that Peace Phoenix assured me that modding is not the way to go, an official fix would come in very handy. All those conquered worlds mean lots and lots of work.

Oh, sorry. I don't do the metaverse.

But that is the correct fix, in case the devs want to make this easy change in 1.3.

Funny thing is, the users figured this out months ago, and we were talking about it quite a bit, as to the correct upgrade path. We had experimented with it back then and found this very problem. So it was very surprising that the devs used the Research Acadamy as the upgrade target in 1.2, instead of the Discovery Sphere.

Well, not really since NLC can be researched after Research Academy can be build.

Yes, but it being a totally different branch leaves the other research techs out of the upgrade loop if the upgrade target is the Acadamy. Making Discovery Sphere the upgrade target includes all the techs prior to that in the loop, which is what is needed.

No one wants to upgrade to anything but the NLC once it is researched, after all.
Especially on planets that have been invaded.

I hope they will do. I don't have anything against some micromanagement, but this upgrading is just getting tedious and could be fixed very easily, obviously.
