So what game do you want Stardock to work on next?

So what game do you want Stardock to work on next?

Besides more GalCiv -- don't worry, that's a given

So you want not just a strategy game and not just a strategy game with a fantasy setting but a 4X, turn-based fantasy strategy game.  That answer received more votes than all of the other choices put together.  There are some very good turn-based strategy games out there already. They're not 4X per-se, but they are excellent games.  A few I recommend include Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic and Dominions 2 (Dominions 3 is in development).  Heroes of Might & Magic V was also recently released.

As some people are aware, Stardock has been trying to license the rights to Master of Magic.  For various reasons that I can't go into, it's not looking like that's going to happen in the time frame we're looking for.  And if we did make a 4X fantasy strategy game that didn't use the name Master of Magic, it would not be a clone of MoM.  We would proceed with our own design (though we have some ideas that are similar such as randomly generated maps, city building, spell research, etc.).

Another popular choice was surprising -- NON-MMO RPGs.  I have to admit that we'd like to do an RPG.   A Baldur's Gate / Planetscape Torment style RPG but with a 3D engine.  I think the traditional RPG market has been underserved in the last few years.  Oblivion and the upcoming sequel to Neverwinter Nights have definitely helped but I think it's a market that has been under served.

Society, which is a long-term development project at Stardock, got some decent support.  It continues forward at a steady pace.  The IT infrastructure for it is what ultimately will take the longest to do more so than the game itself.  And there was a healthy demand for an RTS.  I would definitely like to see an RTS version of GalCiv II -- a streamlined UI with streamlined game mechanics.  I'd want to see an RTS with tactical battles that are integrated into the main screen.  I think next year when Supreme Commander comes out that the RTS world will be in for some real changes in how games of that genre should be made.  Total Annihilation remains my favorite game of all time and I think it introduced a lot of concepts that we take for granted today and its spiritual sequel will likely do the same.

Arcade and adventure games didn't get much support. But come on, who here wouldn't love to see a remake of Planetfall or Loom?

Our eventual goal at Stardock is to be able to release a new game each year.  We're not quite there yet but we're hiring developers and 3D artists as fast as we can. Go here if you're interested. We would essentially need to build out 3 full game development teams to do that.  We've got just about 2 now so we have a ways to go.

Frogboy: Than you SOO much for saying that TA is your favorite game of all time. It is by far my favorite as well. I am constantly amazed at how many "new" gamers have never played nor even heard of Total Annihilation. To this day, I still find it far superior to any other RTS.

I urge everyone who enjoys RTS and has never heard of this game to go try to find it. The graphics are quite dated but the gameplay is still fantastic. I'd love to see Stardock take on that type of "epic" RTS that, in single player mode, can take hours upon hours to win.

What I have never seen is a fantasy turn-based tactical game, something on the scale of Talonsoft's Battleground series. I loved MoM but it is dated now and many games have somewhat copied its style. What I would like to see is some type of 4x but with huge battles, not just 8 to 10 pieces per side. Picture hundreds of units on each side with the tactics and combat results modeled as accurately as possible. I would love to play a turn-base tactical game that involvers the siege of a castle. It’s never been done. If its too hard to make a 4x with huge battles I'll take the huge battles with lots of diffrent scenarios.

Well, I was specifically voting for an updated 'Master of Magic'. This is still one of my favorite games. Some complain that it isn't balanced, but I actually prefer it unbalanced. I can play it hard. I can play it easy.

In fact, I was playing it again (via DosBox) just this weekend. This time I took the 'Warlord' + 'High Men' + 'Underworld' approach.

I have played many of the successors to MOM. Dominions; Age of Wonders; Disciples; Lords of Magic. I still prefer MOM. I think it might be because of the flaws. MOM is a huge game. When they were designing it, they threw in everything they could get their hands on. Then they jumped up and down on it to make it fit. I think it has more possible winning strategies than any 3 modern games. They didn't limit my possible gaming style by throwing out everything that was 'unbalanced'. So, years later, I am still finding fun in MOM.

So, I will patiently wait for another MOM game. No rush. In the meantime, I can play MOM some more.

I hope that whatever Stardock chooses, it does in a distinctive way. The world has enough High Fantasy RPGs and WW2 strategy games. If they try to play Bioware, Bethesda or whoever at the own game they will lose.

BTW, if it is another strategy game, I hope it is a "big picture" game. I can't stand those strategy games where you fight mission after mission in a fixed order. I like snadbox kinda games, and I don't like the idea of having someone above me giving me more orders.

If they do go down the fantasy strategy game route, I hope they try to put an interesting twist on it and create a world with a unique style, both in feel and in art. I'd love a Fantasy Total War game, but that's already being made in Warhammer: Mark of Chaos.

Well I'd like to see a TBS more than I would a RTS. I mean in the way like say GalCiv Tactics (ie squad based combat ya know like Final Fantasy Tactics only its Sci-Fi GalCiv ).
EDIT: RPG in a sense that FFT was, your group of heros/heroines have different jobs/professions and lvl up etc.. as well as can use different items/equip. A Shock Troop wouldn't know about healing but a medic/doctor would. (Example)

A RPG would be so uber. Dragons and Dungeons are sad to say getting overdone, many princesses have been slain and dragons saved already. A sci-fi RPG? Kickbutt!!

EDIT: I love the comment about BG2/Torment, those are some of my favorite PC rpgs too.
Could look into NWN2.. (mmm Dark Avatar as a elite class mmm ).

As long as we still have a GC 3. Cool beans. Just don't "PULL a BLIZZARD" by making an MMO and forgetting your main franchises.

I'd like to see a sort of rpg type game were u start of as lowly roman senator and have to through diplomatic and sometimes violent means gain power and favour in the senate so as to finally achieve the aim of taking the control of the roman empire as consul or maybe become emperor etc.... a lot of freedom would be good in that as a senator u can build stuff to gain favour with the people, gain control of troops and go out and conquer land so as to gain favour in the senate, etc. For me such a game would be awesome i'd love to see stardock do something loke this, i love everything they did with GalCivII and am looking forward to future games no matter what genre they are.

I love the ideas presented and would love to see any of them come to fruitation .I would also like to see what you could do along the lines of two old favorites of mine which i still play .these two are called empire and a game called grandest fleet(QQP).these two are classic turn based stategy games and would love to see what you would do along these lines. i am looking forward to see what you do do.So for now ill just enjoy GC2.

I'm not sure how many old school gamers there are but one of my all time favorites back when I gamed on a Amiga desktop was : Battletech : Crescent Hawk's Inception.

It was a turnbased rpg/strategy type of game where you could control more then one person/mech later on. Since then no one has ever attempted to make a game like this.

I noticed how the majority so far has been RPG and Strategy/Turn Based. Why not combine those as did the Crescent Hawk game.

Some background links on this game :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battletech:_The_Crescent_Hawk's_Inception

One of my main things tho in games is the ability to salvage, steal, take by force, discover via hidden cache, relic, or whatsoever means obtaining ships, mechs!

See: Pirates!, X2,X3, Battletech: CHI, Homeworld series, even the Romance of the 3 Kingdoms strategy series by Koei where you can capture generals/heros, persuade them to join your side as a permanent unit, bribe them, spread rumors to break their loyalty to help bribe, persuade etc. Imprison to break them to join you. I want a game where if I see something I could theoretically take - I can take!

Sci-Fi RPG like the Sega Genesis "Shadowrun" would be awesome. A strategy RPG like Brigandine would be best, you guys should get the rights to that and make a sequel.

Shadowrun is a great world that could be explored! But there may be some issues since a company is releasing a shadowrun game for the xbox 360.

I, for one, loved Master of Magic. If you guys update that or, er, something totally new with a feel for MoM, you've got my vote (order).

Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

There are two fairly recently versions of Empire: EDIE and EDEE
They both allow larger maps and specifically designed for later Windows. EDEE
has a bunch more units and is highly customizable (including the AI).

Highly recommended.

The author of Grandest Fleet has redone the Lost Admiral.

Don't know much about it.

I would like to see both DL and DA go multiplayer, however doing a turned baised multiplayer game is hard. Sort of like the old BBS text baised game BRE; but with the excelent graphics of DL and DA

Way way past time for a follow-up to Sacrifice! I do so miss leading a gaggle of... things over a ridge and casting REALLY powerful spells. Adding Stardock's AI skills and strategy mindset to a concept like Sacrifice would be incredible!

As far as games goes people enjoy RPG's because of the story element and the feeling that the choices they make effect the long term events of the game. Also they are able to see the characters grow and become more in depth from the games events. (cut scenes and mini movies add to that).

Turn based strategy games challenge the thinking player and allows them to overcome a computer AI, which will in the end never be able to adapt constantly to a serious strategy player. (the constant complaints about the AI in GalCiv is just a small example of that). However multiplayer Turnbased games have been rare or non existant in the recent years and have forced people to turn to RTS style games.

Real-Time-Strategy (RTS) games have moved up to take over the majority of multiplayer strategy games. Examples like C&C, Warcraft & Starcraft but a few. however the strategies for winning can often become nothing more than how fast one can built his first strike force and crush the opposing player.

If I have a choice I would a game that has aspects of the main three game types. A game that has a story to it and possible even multiple ending types, along with the long term concepts of a turn based game where pure strategy and tactics is more important that how fast you can click a mouse and send troops off to destroy an enemies base.

One of my favorite games I have ever playerd was Xcom UFO Defense. It had turn based combat, long term character development (well if one was able to keep the soldiers alive), Research and development of alien and terestial weapons and vehicles, and a long term story plot. Of course the graphics are outdated and simple, and the latter version while looking nicer lost the original feel of the first and second game.

Have you ever read the sci-fi novel "Saucer". It's a great book, and would make a unique story line.

I gotta cast my vote for a galciv multiplayer expansion pack. Charge me 20 bucks and do nothing but add multiplayer. Don't balance it or try to, dont add extra features non-multiplayer people would like to have too so they feel forced to buy it. You dont even have to create an online server, just add a section to the forums and the ability to directly connect via IP (after connecting to the meta perhaps, to avoid pirates or something and keep everyone patched up?). The AIs get boring after 100 games or so... lol

I agree with Angelon that X-COM UFO Defense/UFO Enemy Unknown was probably the best game around. It had many different elements to the game that kept ones interest. Squad based, tactical, some role playing elements, economics, research, and wonderful story development that employed a good deal of never ending tension to the game. All perfect ingredients for the ultimate gaming experience.
I see that there is a company about to release an "X-Com like" game shortly (UFO Extraterrestrials), but could just wind up being a clone with nicer graphics...not too sure about this one.
Now, if they could just take the original concept of X-Com and go further by implementing a better AI, deeper stoyline and better graphics that would be a winner for sure.

Hi there,

even it seems to be once again a space game.

I would like a real STRATEGY-ROLEPLAYING Game with a great mainstory ...
some elements from Dominions III, Space Empires IV and Baldurs Gate II ...

and NO Oblivion or Gothic III or Two Worlds are NOT RPG they are bu%$§$§" Action Games and now they ruin the Fallout series, with their god like behavior that what they say IS A RPG and all others are wrong.

Hope to see more 4x and "Turnbased" games.

Thanks and just bought Dark Avatar and downloading to support that.

PS:Bye the way the two new UFO XCOM Clones are not good, you could buy them at Paradox Games online ... but they are boring just wasted money
