A little help please

how to speed things along

I bought this game several months ago and played about 3 solo games. I never got into the campaign part (maybe I will soon).

Anyway I stopped playing for a few reasons. One was it would take about a week of playing to finish even a small galaxy. It seemed most of my time was spent clicking the end turn button and waiting on the next tech I would research.

One major problem I had was that I am really not into ship design, so I didn't design any. Not knowing what I was doing I researched most defenses, but only lazars for weapons. I wanted the best lazars in the game. Well no new ship designs were coming up and I realized (after a long time) that I had to do research in other weapons to 'unlock' the pre-built ships. Well dang, I wish I had known this or had some list of exactly what's needed to get a certain ship.

I played the game expecting to see these great space battles. But the battles were few and far between, and when they did occur they were very one-sided. In my last game I choose that conquest was the only victory condition, thinking that show me some big space battles. However, all it did was make the game last forever.

I guess my questions are these:

Is there a list of what's needed somewhere for each ship design?

How can you set up large space battles?

Can you start the game with some research already learned to speed things along?

Thanks!

Yes check out the wiki.

I assume you are adding your ships into fleets. Just take your biggest fleet and attack an enemy fleet.

There is a scenario, "Accelerated Start" with several known techs and another "Battle of the Gods" with all techs known.

You will find the game much more interesting if you do some ship customization. The base ships are not very good and the AI will walk over you if you just use them. Also make sure you are playing v1.2, there have been a lot of changes since 1.0

You'll be at a serious disadvantage if you restrict yourself to the core ship designs. You don't have to spend hours getting each design to look just so (God knows, I don't), and really, it only takes a few seconds to knock up a new design. I obselete core designs as soon as they appear, including the initial scout / colony / constructor. You can make better ones from the get go, especially if you have racial miniaturisation ability.

I had fleets and such, it just didn't produce much in the way of major battles.

I guess I need to play with ship design. Can you plan with the ship designer and save ships to use in any game, or are they only made and used 'in game'?

Where is the wiki?

Thanks

Ships are automatically saved and made available in later games when you have the techs for them.

You can only design ships "in game". There is no "off-line" ship design capability, although it would be nice to have that IMO.

When I'm in the middle of a game, I find it a bit disrupting to spend 15-20 min designing a new ship. In a perfect world, I would like to have the ability to open a "ship design" window outside of the game and go to town designing my ship along with specifying the prerequisite techs (particularly miniturization level, which is a bit tricky otherwise I would simply start a battle of the gods game and use that as my "off line" ship design tool)

But as Darth said, once you have built a ship, it shows up in follow-on games once you have researched all prerequisite techs.

if you care to have pretty ships make templates. ships with all the jewelry installed but no functional components whatsoever. then you just upgrade the template with engines, weapons, whatnot and you have a decent looking ship with your personal stamp on it

remember to save the game whenever you design a ship. if you don't save the game it wont save the ship. once saved they will keep showing up as long as you use that ship type(drengin, human, yor...). you can play with that ship type regardless of the race you choose. go to the appearance tab after you choose your race to change it to the one you have tricked out.
