Ship Names

I'm a newbie so I may have missed a way to do this, but is there a way to name a ship? I think it'd be a nice feature if it doesn't exist already. I mean I'm tired of having my ships be [insert class name] 674. It'd be nice if you could name individual ships, you know? I'd like to be able to name ships like the TAS whatever. Anyone else feel the same way?

I prefer to name the ship classes, then send them to die. Preferably, humorous names. Like, Fangirl. It's really funny when you see "Fangirl 134 destroyed by Yor Fleet 3."

To change the name you can either double-click on the ships name in HUD at the bottom, or just next to the ships name there should be a symbol that looks a bit like a scroll, you can click that to change the ships name. Same applies for fleets, and planets for that matter.

It doesn't handle like a normal text editor, but if you double click in the name window or the description window you can write over the old text. If you use the arrows you can add to the title. I use the descriptions to avoid doubling up ship types (a common problem when you have 50-60 designs floating around)

I tend to use the Iain Banks method of naming the actual craft, i.e.

Shoot Them Later
Xenophobe
Attitude Adjuster
Serious Callers Only

Can you name other civilization's ships/fleets? Now that would be cool.

I like to name my large- and huge-hulled ships for wildflowers and small woodland creatures. It's a leftover habit from my days playing Traveller. We'd have some great dialog when they moved into an enemy system.

"Admiral, long-range sensors have detected two Human warships approaching."

"Only two? Approaching our glorious battle fleet?"

"Aye, sir. Their registries identify them as... Buttercup and Cottontail?"

Splutters "Buttercup AND Cottontail? Gods, we're doomed! Ensign, check the ready status of all lifeboats... and bring me my brown uniform trousers at the double!"

Well, something fun to do is to name the ships according to your sense of humor. Like naming a scout "Deathbringer" and a destroyer with more disruptors than attach points "Pinpricker."

Then again, I do strange things. Like army a transport with disruptors. Makes it really fun when a minor race tries to take on the troop transport, only to find out the troop transport is better armed than they are.

Ok, thats fabulous, Interstellar taggers! I can see it now...

"Dead Fleet Walkin'"
"I See Dead Drengin"
"Place Boot Here"

Cheers,

I will occasionally name ships but generally only the ones with experience sort of to remind me who they are, but its a bit annoying since the battles are all done on auto a feature I really don’t like and ships die too easy.

I am a fan of Space empires and Total war where you can fight your own battles and your being in command can make a difference and you can keep your one an only battle cruiser alive and force your opponent to kill the escorting corvettes first.

I used to try giving my ships names with personality, like "Xivilia" or "Daedroth" (yes, I'm a loser), but I found it to be too difficult to keep track of which class is which.

I still give some individual ships names when they level up, and I name my starbases, but now I use a formula:

DLN HG-B27G54S36 where DLN stands for "Drath Legion Navy", HG stands for "Huge", and the individual letters and numbers represent the value of the offensive and defensive capabilities in each category.

Boring, but very very easy to keep track of.

I name my ships with cool words like "Retribution", "Insurection", "Allegiance", "Dominator", "Occilator", or "Malevolence". thats the class designation. then i name the hull type with Ftr (Fighter, Tiny), Bc (Battlecruiser, Huge), Ds (Destroyer, Medium), Fr (Frigate, Small), and Cr (Cruiser, Large). then i give them advancement names (X= Experimental, P= Prototype, S=Standard [followed by a name of a race it can take on]). of course, i will name important ships with names. like the "SNS Phoenix" or the "SNS Octavion". other ships i will just give numbers like "SNS-193" or (in a really old game i had) "SNS-4238"... but that game went on forever... still havent finished it actually... i also make sure to include some data like ship class. such as a full name for, lets say, my flagship: "SNS Midas-643-Bc". it helps me keep track of whats what.

well thats my naming system...

it too bad names dont apear on ships... then you could name a ship "If you can read this not only are you WAY too close, your probably going to die by the time you finish reading this." and it would be true. unless it was the "fluffy-bunny class scoutship"....

Actually, I just made a troop transport that makes me laugh. It has four advanced troop mods, about half a dozen missile launchers, and is the Santa Clause Class. It brings presents to all of the good little Yor boys and girls ^^

One thing I do that makes things convenient is to name ships starting with a - like -freighter or -fighter, etc. That way they always appear at the top in the various lists. I also prioritize them with other non-alpha characters like * and ! I do the same thing with fleets. The game does sort non-alpha characters and names that start with them always appear at the top of lists. Makes things easier for me at least.

Well, there's this system I just created for a scifi story. The ship name is the Seraph Bane. It's made primarily to counter the Seraph class battleplate. The Seraph Bane's official designation is Seraph Bane DLBC1702Pentari3EXMana. It is name, followed by design style (DL for Demon Lord), followed by actual class (BC for battlecruiser) followed by the number of the series it is, followed by the name of where it was built (the third planet of the Pentari system), followed by specialized designation to indicate how it varies from the normal design (EX for experimental, followed by Mana to indicate it is a test ship for the Mana Project).

Thus, a Dis Frigate with experimental life-support systems built on Earth would be Mejnato DiFg132097Sol3EXFirefly (Firefly Project being the advancement of life support systems so that people can stay out in the black longer).
