Officers and Flagships?

Gods and Generals

A thunk just hit me, ladies gentlemen and gelatenous blobs.

If you can form fleets, why not hire a commanding officer? He could impart serious bonuses in certain areas, like a colony fleet gets a range boost or a battle fleet recieves + attack and defense. Second idea: a flagship could be chosen for this officer, and it it's taken out the officer dies and the bonuses turn into penalties for the ships.

Second idea: Civilization Flagship. Not like the survey ship, I'm talking a hull size beyond Huge, a massive behemoth that costs no logistics and thusly can join your forces easily. But you only get one every set of techs [early game would give a survey ship, once you have basic weapons you get a warship instead] and if it's destroyed you get severe combat penalties.

Just a thought.

That'd be a pretty good idea. Just one suggestion: merge the two ideas together. For example, I could build my custom flag ship/commander combo platter consisting of the Super Star Destroyer Executor commanded my Admiral Piett, who grants a +20% defense bonus to all ships in the fleet.

Each civilization can only have one such unit at any time, but they are so expensive that a civilization will be a great loss for some time should the flag ship fall. Not to mention a temporary but severe drop in attack and moral throughout the empire.

That is an awesome idea. Lets refine it further, you could start with the flagship but over the course of the game as you recieve techs the flagship could be upgraded and expanded, so you would start the game with a wimpy ship kinda like the servey ship, but by the end of the game you would have some kind of massive death cruiser. Ya know keep the same ship throughout the game(unless it is killed obviously) and just upgrade it and its bonuses throughout the game.

Yes, finaly I have a good idea! XD And since I know Stardock is listening, this might actualy get added to an expansion or GalCiv III. If it does, I will dance my Victory Dance V2.4 twice.

Why do Flagships and all that always have to be simply massive?

I for one would like to choose the size of my flagship.

Because flagships represent the best your fleet has to offer. This usually means the biggest ship since it would have the most weapons and thickest armor.

Actually, my best-armed ships tend to be medium-hulled. But that's simply because I use them as mobile weapons platforms to distract enemy fleets while my battlecruisers are being built.

But, yeah, I like this idea. Still, what's stopping you from making your own?

Riffing on the second idea, how about setting up a capital ship system like this...

Required:

-New ship hull type
A new hull type {like tiny, small, medium, etc} that is player non-buildable {to keep it unique} and scales to have more room than other ships of the current miniaturization level. {more space= more toys= more powerful ship}

-Populated hull list
As tech is researched more and better versions are unlocked {Just like you currently unlock ships like the combat transport, avatar, star dragon, etc}
The player then upgrades the ship within the unlocked list for that hull type {like upgrading a defender to a phoenix or solarwing or what have you}

Hopefully this would lower the amount of programming is necessary.

Possible addition:

-New research branch; Capital ship
Give a percentile bonus to all {or select} capital ship stats {space, att, def, range, speed...}

Notes:
The graphical size is kind of moot since you can add on jewelry to turn a tiny ship into a huge parsec filling behemoth {while still having very little space for equipment}. Therefore as better ships are researched they get bigger down the tree.
Edited out glaring spelling mistakes

I like this.
For the officer idea, take a look at my previous post (heroes):
https://forums.galciv2.com/?forumid=346&aid=124136#960785

- Use a General for ground forces (defending or invading)
- Use a Commander for fighters (tiny and small)
- Use an Admiral for Fleets

Something like that! A flagship would be cool also!
