More Tech Points?

How can I give the custom race more tech points in the creation screen?

Last I checked (which was a short time ago), you can't. It's a hard-coded amount.

Even though you can't add tech points, you can add techs to your Custom Race.raceconfig file.

Are you sure that works? I tried doing that before and it didnt work, maybe I'll try again, I probably didnt do something right.

It works, but I think there are restrictions.

I tried adding a tech I created for my exclusive use which gave nothing but penalties. This worked fine when it was cheap. But the AI researched it, so I tried making it ridiculously expensive. Result: the game ignored my custom race file which was supposed to add the tech. Reduced the cost again...same custom race file had no problem. So it looks like there IS a cap, even if you add using the race file. That cap's higher than the starting points though.

If you want to keep the AI from researching a tech, simply set the prerequisite to IMPOSSIBLETECH.

Later techs should be fine. Impossibletech is a prereq for the one you are giving the race for free. It isn't a prereq for anything after that tech.

I haven't actually tried it, but based on my observations of how the system works in game I feel it is safe to say that only prereqs that are specifically listed for a given tech are considered and not anything it is a prereq for thos prereqs.

But, if the aliens manage to steal or buy that specific tech from you, they WILL get access to anything down the line from it.

the points dont really add up.

example is some of races have techs that arequire pre techs.

but they dont have the pre techs.

if i was to try to do a custom race i wouldnt be able to add techs with out the pre techs.

I think for making a custom race this is little unfair.
what would been kinda neat is if every race in game when you start the game would be given random technology, just like if you where to customiz your own race and add technology it be neat if the diffrent computer oppents would randomly chose there abiltys and technology.
