UP Politics and Actions

I mentioned this idea already in another thread that was devoted to fixing tech trading via the UP , but I figured that this should be in a thread of it's own.

Why can't the UP have a military like the UN does today? Granted that military is made up of other country's military, but it could be used similarly...

For the UP to exist, all the civs contribute a percentage of their income to allow the UP to function and build up a military that can be used when a civ is being horribly abused or ganged up upon by other civs. Think of it as a galactic police force that enforces the resolutions made or one that helps those who are truly in need.

While this is only an idea, this version of the UP would make game play more interesting. It would be nice to actually go against resolutions which would result with a realistic penalty. A fine for a minor disobedience, being thrown out of the UP for a serious crime, and lastly the UP warring against you with their own military if you do something inexcusable. They could even call upon others to help in the war. This would be a better punishment than losing all your trade routes if you decide to leave.

If civs were performing crimes against other civs or disobeying resolutions, an emergency meeting could occur where votes would be taken deciding what needed to be done to stop whatever was happening. Think of the politics that could be used in this.

Wouldn't matter to me, whatever the developers decide on. If they had the time, I suppose they could make they're own design of hulls or something along those lines. Maybe they could just have a logo or something along with their own color scheme like the other civs do.

I guess all I want to see are some more enhanced political options.

The UN has no military. The UN is useless. Ask the slaughtered Serbs, Cambodians, or Rawandans about UN military might. In my opinion, the game already reflects the way the UN is currently run. Larger powers have more say about how they want to see the world run in issues like property and trade.

The UN does use a military, but as stated above, that military is made up of other country's. Also just becasue the UN is lame, doesn't mean the one in the game has to be... in the future hopefully, things will get better.

The UN doesn't have a military. Troops from member nations get involved in UN missions, but they're not UN troops, they're subject to enough conditions and red tape to make them completely useless.

AdeliadeBread is right. NATO does have a military tho.

NATO has a certain number of military units that it can always call upon in time of need. The units belong to the members states still but respond only to NATO (thus making them 99% NATOs)

A better idea would be to allow the UP to use ships from your military autonomously, while allowing you to retake control of them at any time.

So, if you were the main contributor to the UP, you could both help them serve a moderately useful purpose moderately effectively while keeping them in your pocket and subservient enough that if they did something against you, you could ruin them by exiting.
