Dark Avatar Suggestion

I've read the recent description of the features slated to come out in the Dark Avatar expansion and as far as I'm concerned fall 2006 can't come soon enough! (Both for the release of this expansion and the return of Battlestar Galactica) One of the features I find especially promising is the need to research different technologies in order to colonize certain planets. This reminds me of one of the frist space conquest games I played, Space Empires IV. I like this idea as it extends the prospect of colonization beyond a "planet grab" phase at the beginning of the game, and also increases the possiblity of alien races inhabiting the same star systems.

As I was thinking about all of this I though of another SE4 feature that I enjoyed regarding ship design. Like GC2, SE4 allowed you to research various weapons and custom design your own ships -- one interesting aspect of adding weapons to a ship was the concept of "mounts". Weapons in that game had a base size and strength. When adding weapons to a small or tiny ship hull, this was all you got; however, when adding weapons to larger hulls you had the opportunity to choose from various "mounts" depending on the ship's size. These mounts would increase the size of the weapon by a certain percentage, but increase its strength by an even larger percentage (e.g. the mount might increase weapon size by 20% but increase strength by 40%). This gave players a strong incentive to research larger hull designs in order to have access to better weapon mounts. It also made logical sense as the weapons on a battleship should be larger than those on a small scout ship.

The downside to this idea, of course, is the fact that it adds a new layer of complexity to ship design for the A.I., which already has to work hard to keep up with player innovations. Nevertheless, if it could be effectively added it would bring a new perspective to ship research/design. I'm interested in anybody else's thoughts on this subject.

I agree with the points you’ve made, Stardock shouldn’t be shy about taking a peak into the planet system that SE4 had… or rather has considering that I just finished a game not even a couple hours ago.

The only problem I have with the selected dates is that all the stuff that Im looking forwards to is being released right when university starts up again... no bloody time to enjoy the damn games.

One of the biggest gripes that I had with GC2 when I first picked it up was the planet/colonizing system in general. I obviously got over it, but what a disappointment it was when I found out that I couldn’t colonize my beloved icy wastelands…

Having different species geared towards different planets is a great system, but perhaps it could be taken a little further… what about *actual* terraforming? Its practically mandatory in 4x games, and what about atmosphere types?

Hmm, perhaps I should take a break from SE4. But however the system is handled, ill be happy if I can drop some colonies on the iceballs which seem to be floating around everywhere.

As a side-note, having one race that could colonize gas-giants could be an interesting addition… makes it hard to launch a ground invasion when the bastards are floating effortlessly through the atmosphere while your troops suddenly discover the follies of invading a gas-giant…

I'd be happy with such new customization options. My only concern would be how they effect AI performance. AI should be smart enough to take advantage of such options and try counter the player better.

I'm wondering how invasion and 'flipping' will be handled in the expansion. I'm assuming that you can't invade worlds if you don't have the technology to make it habitable.

I'd like to see races sharing systems if the worlds are out of each other's habitable zones, but I don't see that happening.

Surely a planet that flips will retain its population, even if it switches sides. Then what? Would building a colony ship there allow you to use those colonists to inhabit similar worlds?

I'd like to see an option to disable flipping, as in Civ 3.

I would like to see somekind of a border instituted. Maybe two movement points from the planet, and anything within that vicinity can trigger an automatic response.. etc.

I would like to see finer control over your plannets.

E.g. When I have 100 odd plannets its a REAL pain going throught them all to add a factory facility, entertainment facility, ecomonic facility and farming facility. I'm talking close to twenty minutes doing the same repetitive thing.

I'd also like to see a true 3d world where planets/systems aren't on a flat grid but rather some are above/below/to either side of each other.

I would like to see actual terraforming.
And, the ability to nuke enemy planets from orbit would be amusing  ...
