How good is this game

I saw the add in a CG Magazine the other day, and usually I pass by ads like these, but this one caught my eye. The ability to create your own race, ship, and empire amaze me, and I was wondering, how good is this ability. How is this ability to its extent. Are there unlockables to your ship building and empire building or can you get everything for you ship right off the bat. Just fill me in on the extent of this amazing feature. This game is really pulling me in and i haven't even played it yet.

You research techs to increase ship customisaiton. You have the jewellery and everything right off the bat, but you research better weapons, better defences, better (bigger) hulls, better life support, better engines, and certain special modules (namely invasion, construction, colonisation, and trade. In the expansion there will also be mining modules).

You can make your own hulls as .x files, and upload them. The game will recognise and import them. https://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=162&AID=117337 is a link to a star-trek mod, where ships have been made and then imported into the game.

You can customise your races dialogue, abilities, history, pictures, anything you want. The data used in modding is all done in the .xml format, which is the basic format of wordpad, so instantly moddable on any windows computer. You can change any of 26 statistics (a few more are currently unused, may be unlocked in the expansion). You can mod the races you play against. You can also mod the United Planets, and make your own issues in the .xml files, which get used in-game.

All technology in game is moddable, as are political parties and weapons. As well as being moddable, you can make your own for all these things.

Basically, as far as moddability goes, this is probably the best game out there.

This game sounds unbelievable. The thing I looked for most in a game is replayablility and the customizability (if thats the correct word). One other question though. Every new game your technology resets? So every new game you have to research again to make better ships. Oh, and do they have preset ships or everytime you wanna new starship YOU have to build it.

Yes you start from scratch every time but ships you have previously designed will show up in future games when you get the required techs). There are "core" (pre-designed) but you do not have to use them. Most players obselete them immediately.
Designing your own ships is pretty much required once you're past the "traning wheels" difficulty levels.

Oh and... YES! THIS GAME IS GOOD!

Hey Joey,

If you've unsure of the purchase, you could always try the demo first...it should give you a good idea of how the game plays out...plus it's free

Of course, we HOPE you like it enough to buy the full version    but I know that TBS games are an acquired taste to gamers used to more action oriented genres.

Enjoy!

RE: Custom ships. Yes, they are available in future games (assuming you play the same race) and even show up in the tech tree.

It was nice when I took a month or so break to play Oblivion and I started playing GC2 again and my custom ships were all still there waiting for me to discover the correct techs.

I could not help but notice that you seem to have gotten the wrong idea but the genre of the game. You do know that its a 4x turn based space strategy game (think civilzation in space) and not a space shooter, right?

im actually playing the demo right now. I tried to build a ship w/o no technologies, but i didnt have no defense or weapons or nuttin, so i gave up. Now im researchin the galactic warfare. Not sure what gets me weapons but that looks promising .

That technology branch is the beginning of your research into warfare (ground and space) as well as the offense and defensive branches you may utilize. You'll find the game to be quite fun and some of the mods to have advanced past their initial mock-ups to full interactive realms.

I'm currently using the Babylon 5 mod myself and the additional movie add-ins.

I did not know that upgrading a building on a planet meant to change the building completely, I had to retire cause I had no starports :-\.

The game is fun to play, but to be honest it wears of after a couple of months after you learn how to trick the AI.

That's still pretty good. The most replayable game I had before GC2 lasted about 3 plays before I got rid of it. I've played about 15 games on GC2 and I'm still going strong. Should get at least that much again before I'm done with it. Maybe more. Maybe never.

If you're looking to come home, turn your brain off, and blow stuff up, look somewhere else.

But if you don't mind having to think and having more than your trigger finger challenged, then yeah, GC2 is pretty awesome. I've never had two games go the same way, and each seems worthy of a sci-fi epic. Depending on how you play, where you start, who you are, and many other variables, it can be anything from a cold war where influence and wealth can take the galaxy, to good ol' fashioned destruction on a grand scale, with billions fighting and dying over key worlds and precious resources. Those are just two examples, mind you!

Of course, asking us on the GC2 board whether GC2 is good is like going to a Republican convention and asking if Bush is a good president, or vice-versa.

Re: upgrading... Ooops!

Never mind, doesn't sound like you got very far in. Start a new game; there are quite a few threads here about starting strategies if you want some pointers.
