yep. WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) and MACHOs (massive compact halo object) were the primary candidates last i heard, however some theorists also speculate that dark matter may be regular matter, or an aspect of regular matter, that exists wrapped up somewhere in the other 7 dimensions of space.

if i'm afraid the whole dark matter issue is still just a theory. Its a theory that fits the data, but that is all that it is. The dark matter apple hasn't yet fallen on stephen hawkins' head yet.

Ya, what if, just perhaps, the formula that estimates the amount of matter in the universe needs a bit of revision, instead of the universe? That would make more sense.

Same thing for 'Black Holes'. As the theory goes, if you cram enough matter into a tiny space, strange things happen...it just happens to overlook a simple property of matter: Matter takes up space. There's only so much cramming together that takes place.

Not only does it account for mass and energy, but it also accounts for forces and explains why galaxies don't just spin into dissipation. They say, "It's there, we just can't find it yet."

Possibly, but it's considered a "weak" force. You have to have *a lot* of it to do anything. A dark energy ray probably wouldn't do much damage, but it sounds cool. Should be a weapon in the game, "Dark Energy Ray, cost 15, size 12, damage 10"

So its a generally accepted theory? It is far from proven fact, like i said it just fits the data. heres another generally accepted theory: God exists. And lets throw that into the mix shall we; that hidden mass must be god. Praise the lord! Whatever you do don't tell the church!

heres another theory that is bugging me: Comets seeding life on earth. So the scientists have realised that the chance of life starting on earth without help is so small that they came up with this wonderfully amazing theory. Er, mr scientist: where did the life that is hitching a ride on the comet come from? Oh it came from another part of the universe where the conditions were perfect to allow simple life forms to develop, but unfortunately a cataclysmic event occured which threw out these super comets. lucky for us one impacted on earth at the right moment in the earths lifecycle. aren't we lucky?

I do not beleive in god, but my anti-bullshit radar tells me that there is something fundamentally wrong with some of the shite that these boffins spout.

Well, look at what the theory is. It comes from a bunch of guys using mathmatics to explain cosmologic relationships. The math doesn't add up right now so they're making an assumption. Saying "it's generally accepted" does not imply scientific fact. It simply means it's what "most" scientists are using to solve the equations which, by the way, could be entirely wrong to start with. The theory doesn't carry a whole lot of weight right now, definitely not something to get too excited about.

There are plenty of bad theories that come from the scientific community. That's the beauty of it, you can take it or leave it since that's the nature of theory. Most get shot down. It's the minority that stand the test of time.

Whats wrong with that? also if their alot smarter than you shouldn't they have a bigger say on it, your sort of flaming the scientific community based on the fact you don't like their assumptions.

Umm.. actually the reason why they believe Comet's seeded life on earth isnt because the comet had life already existing on it (microbes and such) but rather enough of them hit the earth to put water on the earth, which in turn gives way to life. The water hitched a ride to earth, not the microbes.

why do you want to add something else that can't be seen? we had enough trouble with the precursor library.
