Forum Crashes Browser

I've been having a problem with IE where the GalCiv2 Forum is regularly crashing my browser. It doesn't do it all the time, but does it often. I get a dialog box that states IE has encountered an error and then my browser windows close. It seems to do it at the end of the page load when the medals are downloading. I'm running Windows 2000 SP4 and Internet Explorer 6 SP1. I've tried everything and have not been able to alleviate the problem. For instance, I've deleted all the files in my Temporary Internet Files folder. I've installed the latest Sun Java. I've disabled any unnecessary resident or background programs and plug-ins. I've done a repair on Internet Explorer using "rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance". I've not had this problem with any other web site.

I will be sure to alert the developers to this thread...

Yea, it seems only particular threads crash my browser. To take a guess, I think one of the medal images is doing it. Right now, the "Answers to questions about the Metaverse" thread does it every time. As an experiment, I'm currently browsing the forum with images off. It looks hideous, but it's not crashing.

Hummm. :/ Interesting. We'll look into this and see whats up. Sorry for the random crashing. We believe we know what the issue might be, but we will be doing some testing as far as a solution. We will also be releasing a new version of the forums very soon. We are in the process of skinning it to match the look of the current site. This will help improve several details related to performance here.

Ok, been browsing the new forum and performance is much-much better. Although less frequent, I'm still getting browser crashes. Running W2K SP4 and IE6 SP1. As far as browser plug-ins, I'm running Pop-This and SpyBot. I have Acrobat Reader set NOT to use the web browser interface. I have the GC2 web site in trusted mode. Pop-up control is disabled for galciv2.com. I've installed the latest version of Sun Java and have cleared all Temp Internet Files. It seems to happen only on certain threads when the medals are downloading. Wild guess, but maybe a corrupt medal image?

The new forum is definitely a big improvement, but unfortunately, it has not totally eliminated browser crashes for me as I had hoped.

There could be something wrong on my end, but I've exhausted everything I can think of in troublshooting. The next thing is to try a reload on a test disk and see if it still does it (I have a removable HD with spares so I can do that pretty easily). Could be the fact that I insist on using Win2K instead of WinXP. I just can't get past the facist online activiation with XP.

I've had the browser crash thing, but it was very rare and seemingly random, hardly any effect since I could jump back in. although with the new forum setup, the performance is better.

also try doing cookie deletion and temp internet file cleanup? that usually helps with some forum issues.

New development on my broswer crash problem. After looking at the error in the my event log which states;

Application Failure iexplore.exe 6.0.2800.1106 in pngfilt.dll 6.0.2800.1106 at offset 0

I thought I'd look into updating this pngfilt.dll file mentioned in the error. I installed the latest security fixes for IE 6 SP1 which, for Win2K, update that file to version 6.0.2800.1505. WinXP uses version 6.0.2900 something. This seems to have mitigated the problem quite a bit.

Pretty sure the problem involves the scripts that post the medals. When I "untrust" the site, those scripts don't run and my browser doesn't crash.
