your opinions on game difficulty

Hey everybody!

This questions goes to GalCiv2 newbies as well as grand-masters who play gigantic SUICIDAL maps for breakfast...
I just advanced to the TOUGH setting and the game is becoming more interesting now. So what was the 1st difficulty setting to get somewhat challenging to you? I'm not at the point yet where I have to consider EVERY move to make. IMO it's not necessary on TOUGH. Which setting is really "painful" to you? I haven't tried these yet LOL. :)

Let's see, I always have a hard time with the levels but I think it is Tough, Painful, Crippling, Masochistic.... If I am right then I find Crippling fun (everything lower is too easy) but Masochistic is almost too hard to be fun. It used to be that prior to 1.2 I could play Obscene and have fun but the new build has made the game quite a bit harder. If Stardock would finish the job of having the AI build it's planets up well then I think the game would be hard even at Painful.

I currently play on TOUGH, but my first game was on NORMAL. I haven't tried harder diffs, only because i never play in maps smaller than large, so my games take a LONG time to finish, and I do have to work full-time for a living.

I have some issues with game difficulty, but the AI improves on every patch, so I'm not that worried.

Though I play a bit more on the diplomatic side of things...

Mismatched, I must agree, if the AI built planets more efficiently, even Tough would be a good challenge. Still, I'm having a lot of fun on Tough atm, gonna have to try harder diff next game(I'm owning the map a bit too much...oh well, being a diplomatic guru kinda does that)

For me, Crippling ( Genius ) remains the best challenge/fun ratio with a 120% economic bonuses to the AI. It's not that the Incredible AI ( ultimate level ) becomes too clever, no; but competing against 200% economic cheats is no fun at all.

I usually play at normal I can win at tough but only threw tech of alliance victory which is no fun

Im playing at painful and sometimes crippling.

Ive turned on the 'allow ai to use cpu intensive algoriths' and that made the game more interesting, not more difficult really but just the tone was more realistic, kudos to SD!

Im about to get a new comp so ill be moving up to the gigantic size maps, ill report back on my finding, all my games have been on medium size, which is great fun i find.

Yours in increasingly larger Plasma,
Star Dagger

My last couple dozen games have all been Tough difficulty. I agree with the "planet building" comments..while much better, there's just too many costly mistakes (or the planet is changed incorrectly to combat difficult situations).

I've lost two games due to the most horrible starting positions. Most of the wins were decided by mid-game and only a couple were undecided going into the last year.

I'm getting near mid-game on my first Painful attempt. If the Terrans ever learned to expand during the planet grab phase, us non-evil races would have a much easier time because the Terrans wouldn't always get absorbed by mid-game. ...Otherwise things are going decently, but eventually the Yor (Terran eaters) will attack if only because they already have twice the production ability of anyone else. (note: Drath have built several influence starbases and have never upgraded them).

Short version: I already notice a distinct difference between painful and tough. Nothing insurmountable, but definately a lot less room for error.

Disclaimer: I like a feeling of space and distance (just doesn't make any sense for every sector to have a dozen habitable planets) so I play with abundant habitable planets, but common number of systems, tight clusters and Gigantic map with 3-4 opponents. That way you still have to research techs to travel distances and there's plenty of resources (~110-130 planets between 4-5 races)to go around). Also, I've turned on the CPU intensive AI's.

The first time I felt it was a real challenge was with Masochistic. I could not just roll over each planet. I had to heavily use diplomacy and micro manage each planet. I am playing my first Suicidal and should win in the next couple hours. I have 2 races left (who were my allys that helped me beat the game from the beginning). Since I am going to beat Suicidal I am kinda sad because I am not sure how much better I could be. They need to have a level called 'Impossible'.

*edit*

When are they going to fix the medals below the name? It might seem small to the developers, but I get a lot of satisfaction for something relatively simple.

I started on normal. But I recently switched to painful. I am currently in the middle because I like large games alot more than anything smaller. and I have to restart a few times, because it always seems that my system is located real far away from any other system.

Suicidal is the only level that I find challenging. Anything lower and the computer opponents are pushovers.

well, i actually started on cake walk, just to get a sense of how things work w/o worrying about the AI players.

moved right up to normal for a game, then tough.

now i play crippling or maso. i usually play abund/common/uncommon for the star and planet settings, tight or loose clusters, abundant anomolies, and research usually on very slow. usually play with 9 or 7 opponents. i only play with blind exploration if i use loose clusters; otherwise, it's too likely that 1 player ends up in the corner with only 3 planets.

crippling gives me the best challenge i can still reliably beat. sometimes in maso i'm playing games with a strong disadvantage. sometimes i like that, sometimes it's kind of fun to give it my best and still lose. above maso i have increasing difficulty. i can still win, but it usually is only through tactics i don't totally like (selling opponents ships that make them weaker against you, stationing ships next to mining bases and then giving the ships to the base's owner's opponent so that the base is destroyed. those are good ways to win, but i prefer having fun and have more fun when i feel immersed.

lately i've been playing mods more than anything. i took the example mod and removed the new races, new UI, and slimmed down tech tree. i added a couple new techs (most notably a line of medical techs that boost pop growth) and other things. also tried to 'help out' some of the typically weaker players (i don't think i've played any un-modded games where the iconians were a significant threat).

your miliage and preferences may vary, or course. if you want to try and go to a higher difficulty level, a good thing to do is give yourself some 'training wheels' by modding in some nice bonuses for your race of choice.

Geeze...I can't get past Challenging on all settings set to random and AI intensive moves. I am such a wimp!!! Challenging is enough for me. I get over-run by mid game. My ships are always better but I can not keep up with the economy and planet grab in the beginning. I may try tough just to see how bad I get beat up.

I have settled in on crippling,

I like military conquests.
It seems to me that with suicidal or obscene, you need to go the wimpy way and flip planets.

Cant get past normal, on challanging they start to attack after the first 20 turns, and by than I couldnt do anything. How did they get transports after 20 turns? no idea I want to know that trick. I can get an extra 40 turns if I set everyone on friendly before the game starts though... but yeah, challanging and higher really stink.

Suicidal! But unlike Vulcan2, military is the only way I can win.

Heh I couldn't imagine playing anywhere close to SUICIDAL. I'd get crushed like crazy. Way more practice needed....
Thumbs up to everybody who's playing these settings. BladeVenom & nullspace what are your preferred map sizes?

Started out playing on normal/large and won pretty easily. Last win was on tough/gigantic and was challenged by the AI in pace, but beat the AI with some margin in conquest. I'll try painful next game. May get beat a few times before I can score a win on that level. May have to go back to tough. We'll see.

I find it's relatively easy to win suicidal if you have a lot of time on your hands and follow some reasonably strict methods to get yourself in a good position so you're not attacked. Is it fun? Not really. Therefore, I tend to play on an even difficulty, Tough. This way I can basically play how I want and have a nice fight with the AI.

I've played 3 games all on gigantic maps with 9 opponents. Regenerated maps
each time till i got a homeworld with tile bonus's of my liking.
1st game was tough level and was easy, 2nd game was painful level and even easier ( i improved my tacticts ). 3rd game was suicidal level and was a good
fun challenging game.
From what i see, the tile bonus's on your homeworld have a lot to do with what difficulty level will be a good game. Just so much depends on your homeworld for the first 100 or so moves. I have no doubt that without almost
ideal tile bonus's, my strategy wouldn't work on the suicidal level. However,
I do see possibilities for other strategies to have a chance -- but pretty slim chance.

I liked "Normal" before they nerfed it in 1.1. Now it might as well be "cake walk" for all the trouble the AI gives me.

To answer the original question, the first level where the AI gives me trouble is "challenging". It's still fairly easy, but they put up a decent fight.

I'm settled on "tough" for the moment. It's a fair fight as far as economy and bonuses and I don't like a game where the AI has extra bonuses over me. I'll move up if and when "tough" starts getting too easy. I win probably 9 of every 10 "tough" games, but it's difficult.

The first level where I get any challenge at all is the aptly named challenging level. Not very difficult and the games I play at this level are decided well before I'm out of the mid-game point.

Next Game I'll ramp up the level a notch and see what happens

I'm slowly notching up and now I've actually just won my first "Normal" game with a technological victory. Let's say I like the game but I'm not yet skilled. With my busy schedule I can't devote endless hours to the game like I did in my college days. So I dumb down the aliens and still they take me to the cleaners.

My luck improved when I realized that research was the key to staying on top of things. I build research stations, more research stations, and even more research stations. I wheel and deal with aliens to get their techs. I quickly upgrade my ships so they are always cutting edge. And in the turns of my last game, I emphasized research on every planet and cranked up research to 60% of the budget. Then I pushed the "Turn" button until my people turned into spirit beings.
