Let slip the rodents of war

In the game I am currently playing, the Snathi have gone on the rampage. They have conquered the Arcean home world, destroyed so much of the Arcean military that they surrendured to Korx, taken over the Vegan home world and are now sending some pretty hefty fleets my way. They are still classed as a minor race. Wouldn`t it make more sense for a minor race to able to become a major race, as they now have the second most powerful military, 3 colonies, but still no influence?

Yeah, people pretty frequently wish aloud that minors could be more active.

I've seen the Scottlingas do things like that. Other people never seem to see the minors do anything, though. It's odd.

I keep hearing things like this happening, but minors are always very minor in my games, so I haven't yet had any problem with marauding galatic squirrels. I like your idea though, that minors become majors after a certain point. Maybe that can be added into the expansion?

Cool! I have never seen a minor race conquer another world. They mostly take one more colony (if they get one) and build a few ships for defense. But they are active merchants.

hehee, they've never done that with me but I wish they would!

I think the difference is probably that people who play on galaxies with many planets dont see minors do much, because they dont expand and so get left behind. People who play galaxies with few planets see the minors become powerful on occasion because they start with a nice planet and as all races will only have a few planets, they dont get left behind.

It would be nice for a minor race to be able to basically take the place of a major race they have defeated. Basically they get their spot at the voting table and an influence ring. But only if they defeat a major race.

Ive seen them get pretty powerful, just another great feature in a classic game!

nearly the same thing happened with me, but with the Scottlingas (or whatever they're called)
Then, they came after me. Bad choice...

Oh, man, I don't!

I remember back in GalCiv 1, when one patch let minor races expand just like the main races. I'd run into situations where major races got backed into a corner and a minor race had more worlds than ANYONE. Anytime I left minors in the game, they became just as much of a threat as the main races, yet another thing trying to colonize all the good worlds before I could. I hated that. I like the minor races the way they are now...little races that are too apathetic or retarded to care about dominating/uniting the galaxy, but they'll fight back if you mess with them.

Still, there should be a "Minor races stay minor" switch or something, so the player can have it either way, as they prefer.

In my games, the minors races don't last long if they are near my territory

They are a great way to get PQ15 worlds.

Yeah, it would be cool to have the minor become majors, and mabey see the major swap with the minor, but become something like the "Arcean Rebellion" or something. Though I don't want another senario like in GC1 where the I-Leage ends up slaughtering every power in the galaxy. Just have them become formidable, but not slaughter everything unless the other major races are doing nothing.

Ive seen it happen once...

The Dark Yor conquered the Arceans and Korx and pretty much annhililated the Drengin before I won a diplomatic victory...

was a strange game.

First time I saw the Snathy I almost died laughing. What a great sense of humor Stardock has! They were actually in my last game and were at war with the Drath the whole game. I kept feeding them money and warships and they kept the Drath busy until very near the end when they finally succumbed. It's good being Evil and having a friend (I was Drengin).

About the races living on as rebellions and minors... it sounds like the expansion is going to do just that. It's not on the main page but if you click on the full article and scroll down with the screen shots it says "The Altarians are conquered but the resistance lives on!"

Sounds to me like even more of a minor race than the minors. I hope that you can have the option to start out as a rebellion if that's the case.

I have yet to see a minor race go on a military offensive, but I do get random events where a minor race's spies steal all of a major race's technology at once, and indicate their willingness to sell it to you for the right price.

I just looked and you're right. It looks like the Altarians will be one of the races 'wiped out' in the expansion but will still be around as a minor race it seems.

As for the Minors. None of them have gone a rampage lately in my games, but I do remember other games where one or two would. Very chaotic. A minor race should become a major race once it hits a certain level. If they've conquered like 3-5 star systems they should be considered a major race.

The Snathi are always the most evil creatures in my games. they often make the Drengin and Yor look like preschoolers. In one of my games they stole the advanced Drengin's tech, and then crushed them under thier furry heel. They went on to conquer most of the galaxy before I allied them and made an awsome sneak attack that keft them in shambles. There have been several other similar scenarios. In short the Snathi are EVIL.

Last game I was on a large map. The minor race sat there and traded for a while, made threatening noises about my military bases and not much else. I didn't pay much attention to their ship stats until I made a serious grab for their PQ31 planet. Their frigates devestated my fleets (yes, plural) then went on to beat my overly large empire into the ground. I was allied with the Terrans and Drengin, so they went after the minor as well (sorry, I'm terrible at remembering names) and they got their asses handed to them as well. ONE PLANET developed these ass-kicking ships. I had multiple PQ20+ planets and a near maxed tech tree when this happened. I threw a LOT of ships at their fleet and got a significant reduction in my military expenses as a result.

Thankfully I had saved before I invaded
