Ship crews and fuel limitations

I would like to see ship crews in the game.i.e. picking ship captains.

and also fuel depots or requireing ship to dock for fuel, supplies and repair.

A ship can't travel around space forever.

Ship captains would be nice...

I believe that the maximum radius of travel allowed by life support systems is also meant to simulate maximum supply lines. This is ultimately a large scale strategic simulation after all... no reason to allow micro-mangement to rule it(though adding ship captains could be argued into micro-management territory.. but its still too cool to miss, so some small amounts will be okay ).

nah, I don't really want to have more micromanagement.

Sometimes though if the scout ship that I'm using isn't particularily fast and has a long range, I pretend that the crew goes into cryogenic stasis. Either that or its a completely robotic ship. although cryogenic stasis sounds cooler

having heroes like captains, fleet captains, or even admirals which are very experienced and add a bonus to the fleet they are in. They'd still risk getting killed though.

Captain Kirk, Captain of the Drengin Flagship. Has a nice ring to it.

the devs mentioned that heroes are to be considered for inclusion into the expansion pack/galciv3.

why do you need fuel depots? they are already there in the form of starbases and shipyards, i mean i understand you're saying youd like to have to take ships back and fuel them, but the range of ships is dependant on life support on the ship, and location of planets and starbases. when you reach your max range you build a sb and it gets bigger, because theoretically your ship would go back there when it needed stuff. again i get what you're saying, but its pretty much there already

Fuel & supplies is already simulated well enough with the range limitation from starbases & planets. You do know that real ships & fleets have been able to refuel/rearm/resupply out at sea ever since WWII? They have smaller ships whose sole purpose is to carry fuel & other supplies out to the fleet so they don't have to return to port. Pretty sure that ability could apply out in space as well.

I think heroes/captains/admirals would be a nice addition, especially if they augmented the fleet's power or gave them other special abilities.

I agree they need something like supply lines, or supply ships. What it would provide is an in-tangible that would allow a weak opponent to sneak out a victory, or at least set someback a ways.

Imagine your doom ray equiped ships having to turn back, or being stuck out in the middle of no-where being pestered by ships that should have no business attacking them.

Personally think best way of doing this is to decrease range overall, so you'd need to build lots of resupply starbases -- which the enemy could go after to keep your fleets at a distance. (or at least you'd have to waste a bunch of space on life support)

guys, if you just IMAGINE a bunch of invisible resupply ships in a massive supply network constantly working to refill that storage space(support module) on ships in the field....

SD just decided that all the work of setting up such a network WOULD NOT BE FUN, so they let it fade into the background and be handled thru support attributes on ships. starbases and planets extend the range of your invisible logistics network rather than actually doing anything much to the ships if you look at it that way. the support modules are actully just storage space for supplies, larger closets meaing longer time between resupply visits from the ships, meaning supply ships HAVE longer to get to you way out yonder. also note that fuel is not necessarily a requirement for these ships. fuel could be interstellar dust, or scooped from gas giants you happen to pass by. the ONLY things you loose is the ability to attack their supply lines directly, and a big pain in your neck. and knocking out a starbase CAN effectivly be an attack on supply lines so...

i am really not getting why your making an issue of this. seeing this invisible network would mean a) coding it, b)burning cpu time regulating it and displaying, c)more clutter on the minimap, d)mass exodus of all but the most anal and hardcore players(assuming it is set up manually).

as to the hero/commander thing, might be nice. Brad is on record as wanting it so let's just wait and see what happens

No body is making an issue out of anything.

Just a thought., I also think resupply Star Bases or resupply ships should have a larger role.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Well if you research the engine tech up to and past the warp VII range you could just claim that it's based after trek and their warp power which gives your ships a 5 year running around time before they have to refuel/resupply ( or have a cargo ship come and dock with your ship/fleet etc..

I would definitely like to have some sort of supply effects in the game other than the rather vague notion of the area of effect starbases. The main problem with this game is it isnt very realistic in terms of how we know travel and warfare to be carried out ie supply lines being one of the most important things you need to get sorted and hitting an enemies supply lines can badly affect their ability to make war.

This should be in the game. Fuel/supplies are in Stars! and Space Empires 4 (sort of).
