Does the AI ever form alliances?

I have played over a dozen games and I have never seen the AI form an alliance on its own. This seems like it is definetly unbalanced in the player's favor if the AI is incapable of initiating one. It creates obvious exploitation tactics such as spamming cheap ships in the early going to get the + modifier in the military strength to raise disposition for alliances. If you manage a couple allies its usually as good as 3 on 1 if anyone dares attack you, and less frequently they jump in if you go on the warpath yourself. It has already been brought up that an ally is good for the entire game in as far as loyalty. So why is the AI unable to form alliances itself?

yes they do, especially against a common threat or between similarily aligned races. Doesn't usually start happening until mid or later game.

also, what version are you using? maybe you need to update.

yes they absolutely do, it just takes them a while to get the alliances tech. trade it to them if you want to see it happen faster.

all i know is when i was evil and any time i attacked a good civ id have 3-4 other civs immediatly declare war on me

They most certainly do... I started two wars of Aggression against both the Torians and the Iconians. As they were dying everyone else in the galaxy (that I had met, and those I just had) declared war on me. there were two alliances. the Good/Neutral (Altarian and Terrans) and the Evil (Drengin/Korx/Yor). They decided to put away their differences and focus on me, the neutral Metroid Monarchy. So I killed them!

that can happen even if they don't have alliances, and even if it's not the human player attacking. it's sort of a "we could be next" defense.

yea they do. so what you do is form an alliance with one member of the opposing alliance and get the other one to attack you. Bwahahahahaha! gotta love this game

I've played a 9 player game and all 8 PC's formed an alliance against me. if you give the AI the alliance tech your gona realize there gona use it alot.

They sure do.. In a few games it made going to war almost impossible as it would mean all other races would (could, if they decided to) go to war with me to honnor the alliance..

Funny thing, if race A as an alliance with C and Race B has an alliance with C then when A attacks B then C does declare war on A but the alliance doesn't break with A and there's no war between them the next turn.

The AI never has formed an alliance in any of the games I have plyed. I ve only played challenging, but they used to do it all of the time in Gciv1 no matter what level.

I'm actually in the middle of what was a 8 civ game. The torans were talking trash so i attcked them, then the Iconains declared war on me in honor of their alliance with the torians. The great thing was, that when the iconains declared war on me, the rest of the civ's declared war on them and/or the torians. Full on interstellar war, it was great!

In my games the ai does form alliances. Mostly the good races band together. In my last game for example the Torians, Drath & Iconians formed an alliance. I was allied with the Arceans. So suddenly i was asked to declare war on the Torians because they attacked the Arceans. Next round the Iconians & Drath declared war on me. But only then did i find out that the Arceans initiated the whole thing because they attacked the Iconians. In the end i conquered the Drath , Torians, Korx & Iconians -> Diplomatic Victory. Great game

Dito!

In my games I usualy get at least one pan galatcical war (WWI-style) per game with everybody at war with everyone- all due to tight alliances, takes but one spark for the galaxy to turn real nasty.

Play on higher levels and enjoy spectacular warfare throughout the universe...

This is a good point ...
I see the AI ally with each other ...
BUT NOT with ME !!!!!
I HAVE to ally with them ....
Will keep an eye on this one ...

I didn't know minor races could declare war on each other. Never seen that myself!

Yes they do. Not too much though. I have even seen them ally with Minors.

Yeah, war seems to come all at once.

It's not always due to alliances though.

Sometimes its the AI recognising that a certain race is too weak to live and since all the AI are using the same base, they probably do the same calculations.

Sometimes it is the whole gang up on the strongest player/ biggest aggressor effect

Other times it looks just like opportunism, I was bashing up the Drengin, and my loyal allies the Terran didn't lift a finger until the Drengin was half dead, then suddenly i got a message saying my loyal allies were joining in... Thanks a lot...
