ship orders?!?! disappearing after turn

Hello,
In the beginning of this game, before many patches, ship orders used to be persistent. I'm thoroughly confused at them now. I keep having to reissue guard and sentry. Hell I don't even know the difference between them. When I toggle autoattack, NOTHING happens under my ship, like it used to. It used to say autoattack onder the ship. If I hit autoattack if flies to the nearest star base and parkes there.. HMMM! Or it flies to the nearest plantet and bonzai suicides into it.
What I am looking for is a way to park my ship over a tradeline, and have it pickoff freighters, w/o me clicking orders each turn to do it. How do you do that? Thanks.
