Troop ship in orbit gets 1-1-1 defense even if it's armed.

Apparently there is some improvement that you can build on a planet, after which ships in orbit around every planet get higher attack values.

This improvement also seems to give troop transports a 1-1-1 defense rating.

Now, I haven't been paying very close attention, so I have no clue which improvement this might be. But I noticed an error: any ship with a troop transport module always gets 1-1-1 defense in orbit. Even if this ship has a much better defense by itself, it still only gets 1-1-1 when it's in orbit around any planet. I suppose this is a bug. One of the core ship types is even an armed transport, which will also get the 1-1-1 defense when in orbit.

Does this only apply when it's in orbit, or is it all the time?

I know one of the UP laws can change the attack value of any transport, but AFAIK it's only supposed to be a minimum, and don't know if it affects the defense values or not.

He means, when it is in orbit of a planet, it has all it's defenses set to 1-1-1, REGARDLESS of what defenses he has on it. So if it's normally 50-25-30, in orbit it'll be 1-1-1, but when it's in space it'll go back to normal. Am I correct chriskrusz?

Don't troop ships automatically get 1 defense in each area anyway? Whether they're in orbit or not?

I'm sure I noticed this before. It's pointless, of course, since they'll rarely have any weapons, and tend to have only 1 HP, but I'm pretty sure that all troopships have 1 defense in each area.

Troop ships do not automatically get 1 defense. They only get 1 defense when they are in orbit.

Apparently there is an offensive weapon and troop ship 1-1-1 defense bonus for ships in orbit that I wasn't aware of until now? No special tech required either. This does not seem to be documented anywhere though.

This might have to do with a starbase improvement called Protection Fields or something that give all ships an extra boost to all defenses... might be that the defense bonuses from researching Planetary Defenses goes to ship defense as well as invasion defenses...

I think that Milbase improvements only affect ships with at least one point of defence (For defencive modules) and/or one point of offence (You guessed it: Offensive modules)

chriskrusz is right. There is a 25% bonus to weapons for all ships in orbit. There is probably a hardcoded 1-1-1 defense for troop-transports as well. The dev's might have thought that nobody would bother placing defenses on a transport because of the fact that they go poof after you've invaded a planet. They might have just overlooked a line of code too.

Yes, ships get an attack bonus in orbit, that has always been. However, if you had a transport with 50-50-50 defense (just an example), isn't it a little dissappointing that it is forced to have 1-1-1?

LoL, did you log in from a computer somewhere else other than your own? Because if you don't log out, the browser will stay logged in even after it's been rebooted.

Well the only problem that I have encountered with GC2 thus far is on the Ship Design screen. The 3 rotational component dials never let me position the axis at the 5oclock position on the dial. I can select the other points without a problem and it doesn't matter what the component is that I am trying it with weapon, engine module etc.

What would be great would be if they instead used a rotational slider that allowed you to also input the degree of rotation in. Similar to the slider and input box in the Diplomacy screen for Credits and Influence points. The slider would give you more control in the long run.

Actually, you can use the mouse scroll button to position those dials, that's what I always do. If you set the angle to completely free you can position things any way you like.

Starlost,

Please check the Options screen/Interface tab.

There is an option under "Ship Designer" labeled "Rotate Parts"

You can change this to choose the size of the angle increments you would like to use, or set to "Freely" to allow you to choose any angle you want.

Chrsikrusz is correct in that you can use the mouse wheels to set the dials too. However, the mouse wheel will move the dial in the increments set on the option screen, so if you want full control, set your option to "Freely."
