Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar Announced!

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar Announced!

Sometimes, evil wins...

https://www.galciv2.com/darkavatar/

This Fall Stardock will be releasing the Dark Avatar expansion pack for Galactic Civilizations II.

Dark Avatar is the first official expansion pack to Stardock's award-winning PC strategy game, Galactic Civiliations II.

The expansion pack goes far beyond the typical expansion. Not only does it add new units, new races, new maps, and a new campaign as is expected in an expansion pack, it greatly expands the feature set of the base game in very significant ways.

Here are some of the features that will be in the expansion pack:

  • Custom Opponents.  Just as players can design their own civilizations; in Dark Avatar they can design their own opponents to play against. This isn't just cosmetic either, players will be able to set up their intelligence, personality, playing style as well as what they look like, what ships they use, what dialog they use, etc.  These opponents are then saved for later use.
  • Agents. Players will be able to hire agents via espionage to wreak havoc on their opponents or to counter enemy agents operating in their own empire.
  • Special Worlds.  Worlds in Galactic Civilizations II will have an additional classification -- environment type. Different races will start with the ability to colonize only certain environment types.  Through research and technology, additional planet types can be colonized and conquered but it will totally change the way the initial colonization phase of the game plays out.
  • The Epic Generator.  One of the things Stardock has put out that people seem to like are epic stories of game play examples.  Dark Avatar will generate such stories automatically and export them as HTML so that players can share their stories with others and look back at a good game as the epic saga they imagined.
  • Asteroid Fields. The economics in Dark Avatar will be altered to make strategic control of additional kinds of resources important. Amongst those will be the asteroid fields which, when utilized, can help the closest colonized planet. In additional, asteroid fields act as a natural barrier slowing down incoming ships.
  • New Treaties. Diplomacy will get beefed up with the additional of new diplomatic treaties. These treaties not only provide mutual benefit but give players more tools to forge their relations with other players.
  • New Races. Two new civilizations will be introduced to the mix including the evil Korath who are bent on genocide at the galactic scale.
  • New hulls and ship components. A ton of hulls and ship components are going to be added. This really can't be overstated enough because not only are there going to be a lot of these components but the quality is far superior to what we've done before thanks to having mastered the art of making ship hulls and components.
  • The New Campaign: Dark Avatar. This time, the Drengin Empire are the good guys. You must make the galaxy safe for oppression and tyranny...because the alternative is worse.

The expansion pack will list for $29.95 but users will be able to pre-order it for $24.95.  The expansion will be initally released digital only via TotalGaming.net (and the store on GalCiv2.com). though players can also have a CD sent to them as well.

The release date is this Fall.

Fixing a trade exploit. Right now, if you offer, say, Laser 3 and 4 in the same deal, the AI will complain. But it'll take them
separately - if you sell it Laser 3 and THEN 4 in the same turn, it'll pay for both. It should be able to see what's going on there.

it's not a bug. if you trade laser 4 first, it won't want laser 3 at all. basically, it doesn't want to trade for lower weapons techs than it all ready has.

Some explanation for why the Dread Lords never got a tech victory.

okay, i understand wanting an explanation. how about "they wanted ultimate power, not ultimate knowledge".

How can I purchase Stardoc products without using a credit card.

I believe they're called "debit cards".

Anyway, Stardock. I was excited about the expansion before this, now I'm DYING to have it. The only thing I'm disappointed about is the lack of mention of a map/scenario/campaign editor, but honestly that's small time compared to the stuff you intend to put in. Knew about the Agents, but different worlds with different environments? Asteroid belts? Custom opponents? Hahaha...awesomeness...

okay, now i can say what i came in here to say.

I CAN'T FREAKIN WAIT

i remember brad saying there would be things no one expected. i definately didn't expect the planet type addition. i'm really looking forward to it.

the glipmses of the new art look great too. i may just have to get a new PC around xmas to get this and other games up to their full visual potential.

it's obvious when a compnay's employees are making a product they'd want to use as well as sell.

That's why you offer Laser 3 first.

Will it fix any bugs, though?

PayPal cannot be used for pre-orders, as funds via PayPal have to be deducted immediately and pre-orders aren't charged until a product is made available. A roundabout way of pre-ordering via PayPal would be to become a TotalGaming.net member using PayPal, then using your tokens to obtain the expansion (assuming you're going to download it).  Otherwise you'll need to wait until the expansion is actually available.

A CD version of the expansion is available direct from Stardock for those who can't or won't download it for an additional shipping & handling fee.

I am more worried about PayPal themselves. Simply because they are evil.

Could any Americans help me out with what "fall" actually means? I remember a game I was waiting for last year was scheduled to come out in the fall. It acually turned out to mean late December. Is that an unusually late definition? Cos to me that's winter!

"Fall" usually means September October November. or traditionaly after the American holiday of Labor Day (this year September 4th) December 1 is usually considered winter though when people say that winter starts and ends varys a little bit around the country. In Michigan, some people may consider 1 November winter, while in Florida thats mid fall.

But remember game developer times are promises only. Stardock is better than most but release slippages are a way of life. I trust them to have a final product out only when it ready. )But I'll take any beta's they'll give me!!!!)

Could you guys please do something about your bland and boring tech tree also? It's one of the most annoying parts of the game for me that the tech tree is so linear and repetitive.

30$? Too expensive for an expansion in my opionion.

I live outside of the US and I don't have a credit card, so buying this isn't an option anyway (Moreover I hate digital distribution).

But despite that nice feature list.

Yarlen, any idea how many tokens the expansion will cost? (I have had 5 saved up just for this...   )

I am in total love. If I had a credit card, i'd preorder right now.

I'm excited to see all of the new features. They'll be worth the price, themselves. Espionage, diplomacy, and custom worlds were all things I was asking for. The improved graphics and the epic generator were unexpected, but very welcome surprises.

However, I have absolutely no interest in the new campaign. Call me weird, but I've never gotten off on playing the epitome of evil. I realize that in the campaign, you play as the lesser of evils, but you are still evil. It might have been more compelling to play as the race of your choice, and be forced to ally with the "less-evil" Drengin to fight the Korath, who are a threat to everyone, including the Drengin. Of course, that sounds like the Dread Lords campaign. Maybe play as a Drengin faction willing to forego conquering the universe, in exchange for making sure your clan survives, as you see the Korath's path as leading to destruction of your people, too. That sounds familiar too, I know. Anyway, the campaign, as described, sounds like something I'll never touch. It's too bad that they lock you into evil.

The auto-generated AARs and asteroids making the galactic map a bit more strategic are probably my favorite new features in the expansion. Definitely looking forward to those first beta builds!

Swwwwweeeeeeetttttt

Those new graphics look awesome. Even more fun designing my unique ships..... Q Ghostbusters.... Choose the form of the traveller.... OK who thought of the "Stay-Puff" Dreadnaught Ship or something like that?

Ooh, shiny!

But don't we already have a mass genocide race (the Yor)?

And heck, if simple mass genocide wasn't enough, we have the Dark Yor, who are apparently going for some sort of Genocide Special Edition.

But whatever, not like I'll be using the campaign. Go features!

Dregin, Korath? One wants to enslave, the other destroy all races. OMG!!! It's Star Control 4!!!! This is almost similar to the Star Control 2 story. I LOVE IT!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Sorry for the caps.. I got too excited. Star Control 2 had the best space opera stories ever. Now who knows, will GalCiv 2 surpass it? I hope so!

*Jumps around the room for joy* I haven't felt this happy since, well... I played Star Control 2.

So, when can i pre-order. I'm gonna do that asap.

Keep up the great work Stardock. You got a customer for life.
