Selling Galciv2

Hi there I wish to sell my copy of Galciv2, preferably on ebay but am not sure how to procede due to the copy protection. I do not want to sell the game and not allow the new user access to the free updates. Advice on how to procede would be appricaited. Thanks

You can't. If someone buys it off you they will need their own brand new CD key. They can get one from Stardock at a discount, but it will still work out better for them to get a new copy.

You can't? And what happens, if the seller simply gives the buyer his serial?

Well the serial number is obviously still on the box so I would n't have to give them that but you do need a file sent to you, by Stardock, to activate the extra content. That is what the new buyer would need to be able to get a new copy of. If this is impossible then I will be very disapointed with stardock as games should be able to be resold when they are finished with. Pete

I don't understand u want to sell GC 2? No, can't get my head around that

Boggles the mind. GalCiv2 is not copy protected.

It is, by the serial. You can NOT resell GalCiv2 like other games because each box has a unique serial, through that serial you get updates. That is how it is copy protected.

Sim City 4 is copy protected. It is impossible to copy the cd, and the cd must be present to use the game. These conditions do not apply to GalCiv2. Any number of cd copies can be made and the cd is not required to run the game. As long as you use the original cd version, there is no protection at all. If you want to update it, then it is protected by the unique serial number which can only be registered to one person. Technically not copy protection from my point of view.

And so, if you want to sell the game, it's all about transferring the serial number - however, that automatically also means to share the account, which is bound to that serial, if it was used to download content already. Or so I think. I'd be interested on what stardock thinks of that matter? Whether they find it ok that people resell their game or not. Obviously a resold game is lost revenue for them. However, if every one of the 100.000 who bought galciv2 already did sell his game and the game was then resold, say, twice again, that makes a potential of 400.000 people who'd be inclined to buy galciv3. So a reselling policy might have it's disadvantages, but also advantages. Probably depends on whether it's a short-lived company or a long-term planning one. So far it looks like the latter case. (Which I quite like)

While I understand the rational for them not bothering to go the extra step to make the serial numbers (and thus the updates) transferable, I still think it's a shitty thing for them to do. Especially when the company is known for its otherwise great support. People have been buying and selling used games ever since there have been games. It's not like they didn't know the issue would come up.

Each Galciv2 serial is registered to a serial and an email address. You need to enter this information in SDC to get updates and without a valid email address this is not going to work.

We do not support the transfer of serial numbers at this time. You may resell your copy of GalCiv II (not like we could stop someone from doing it), but the person who buys the game from you will not be supported past the v1.1 update unless they purchase a valid license from us.

Wait so this burn of Sim City i am holding in my hand doesnt exsist? Damn nero making copys that dont actualy exsist And damn the cd-less crack thats on the cd... Ohh wait people do this for everygame... There isnt a game that can not be cracked, its just amount of effort (that includes x-box360, btw its already been cracked)

So there are ways around it. EA took steps to prevent it, Stardock does not.

Very true... any game can be cracked and any CD can be copied. If someone puts up a wall others will find 10 ways to get past the wall. Personally I purchase my games and look forward to buying and playing Gal_Civ_2 if multiplayer arrives. I also encourage those which pirate games to purchase legit copies of their favorite games because this increases chances of seeing sequels and encourages other companies to make games of that type.

When i was younger and had a cash flow of like 10 bucks a month there wasnt a question of weather or not i was going to buy a game. So all i got was burns. I have saved all these burns over the years and i am right now actualy buying all of the orginals on e-bay/amazon, god i love bargin bin. Nothing like a classic to bring back good memorys. The only thing i regret is that i had an actualy copy of Sid Meires Alien Crossfire and i gave it away, its now on e-bay/amazon for over 100$... i dont even know how that makes sense. I just got a copy of diablo2,evolva, and C&C in the mail. It feels good to be a kid again. Then i notice i am still in a lab so i have to get back to work

Blimy. I opened a hornets nest with this one! Think i'll crawl back into my hole now. By the way, how much would a license cost? The full price i'm betting!

We're not posting that info publically, but it's not full price.
