Questions on Starbases...

Ok I am still kinda new to this game and I'm confused as what to do with and what exactly starbases do. There are 4 different types, got it, but where do I place them? In the manual it says," Starbases are stationary platforms that can be built in any parsec that doesn't contain a planet or star." <-- what is this, I don't get it? So what this is telling me is that I can build a starbase where there is no planets? How do my planets get that "economic bonus," or a "military upperhand." Or am I just a retard and you CAN build them within your civilization influence "ring" that are near planets or at the borders of your ring. I have tried experimenting and all I can tell is that it'll increase the border alittle. I guess what I'm trying to ask is how does all of this work. Please help and thanks for the comments!

That just means you can't actually build them in the same square as the planet itself. They have an area of effect, which is indicated by a faint translucent circle around them. A starbase can usually service several planets at once.

You also need additional constructors to make the bases useful. Bases without any modules can only improve your ships range and increase your civs influence a bit.
