Ever since I picked up a copy and installed the game, I've had the ships drawn in flat, untextured colors, just the two chosen ship colors plus the engine output color - which is always white, no matter what's chosen on the civilization editor, unless that color determines engine trails or something instead. The disable-ship-textures option on the options screen is unchecked. I won't mind if it turns out to be one of those automatic tweaks the game has to do to run at a good clip on my machine, I just want to know whether it should be doing this, or whether I have an option of getting the pretty ship designs instead.
On top of that, I don't appear to be able to post on the board using Opera 8.51; either that or the board was going through some error time.
Apologies if this one's been posted before.

I recommend you both upgrade your ram and then upgrade your graphics card, if you're on a budget, upgrade the graphics card first, as it will give you the best improvement for under $100. Consider consulting pricewatch.com for your upgrading of a grahpics card, and newegg.com for RAM.
You're best bet with this program is about 1 GB of ram 2 would be even better, and a 6 series Geforce card or 7 series if you want to make it your final upgrade for a computer purchased a year or two ago. I personally have a similar rig that came with 256 MB RAM, and 2.4 ghz p4, and the Geforce 4 MX 440, although a great Geforce 4 card (for the money) Gee thanks DELL, I had to upgrade the RAM almost overnight and the graphics card was no gamer card after about 6 months to be sure either. Just try playing Doom 3 in 640x480 with a geforce 4 mx and then going over to you bud's house on his new hyper threader, and the 6800 and watching it in 1024 x 768 and its like watching a movie vs watching a cheezy video game. Same problem with the textures, the geforce 4 mx doesn't do textures real well, and for less then $100 you can upgrade your rig enough to make it work.
I'm not sure but I think an HP Pavillion might be a lap-top, I mean or whatever they call em when they dont come in a box, in which case you're pretty much screwed, cause upgrades are costly and harder to make fit inside a rig, with the space considerations as well as the power structuring. In that case, you are probably SOL.
Hopefully you dont have that issue. Cheers and good luck.
You could also try getting the latest drivers for the card.
I have an overclocked version form Evga that works pretty well with this game. It costs round $175.
